Protesting Pumpkin Spice

The official fall season may not start until mid-September, but the first of the month began the reign of our beloved (or hated) autumn queen: Pumpkin Spice.

Personally, I adore pumpkin spice flavors. I know that it’s basic and fake, but to me there is something very comforting in a sip of artifical spiced pumpkin flavors. Even if it’s still warm outside (and it is, because it’s September in Georgia), pumpkin spice carries connotations of everything I love about this season: crisp leaves, cool air, flannel, and brown leather riding boots.

For the most part, the world seems to agree with how I feel about pumpkin spice. Restaurants and food producers everywhere have been rolling out pumpkin products all week; Dunkin Donuts and Einstein Bros Bagels both began the pumpkin parade recently with donuts, bagels, cream cheese, and of course, coffee.

However, the world only seemed to start noticing when Starbucks launched the fan-favorite Pumpkin Spice Latte on September 1st. It is only available with a digital “fan pass” until its official release on September 8th, but still, this extremely early release has some people up in arms. One man, Sean Bauer, is even protesting the release. He has pioneered the movement to “Stop Premature Pumpkin Spicing” by holding up signs outside stores and spreading the #SPPS hashtag on Twitter.

What do you think? Are you as obsessed with pumpkin spice as I am or would you rather it stay firmly in fall where it belongs?
