Ladies. We need a minute. Put down your iPhones (and Androids) and let’s have a little talk. As social media begins to follow through on its plot to take over the world, I can’t help but notice how obsessed we’ve all been with Instagram lately. I’ll be the first one to admit that, even when I’m in class, I have the sudden urge to refresh my timeline every ten minutes. Pathetic right? Sure, I love “The Gram” as much as the next person but it seems like my newsfeed, as of late, has gone completely buckwild! It’s like I come across one annoying post after another whether it’s something inappropriate, irrelevant, or just plain stupid- it’s getting out of hand, to say the least. That being said, I’ve taken the time to create a short list of everything about Instagram that makes me want to pull out my own hair. So, collegiettes, without further ado, I give you 6 of the most annoying things on Instagram.

  1. Hashtags: I know we all feel a sense of joy when we get random likes and random followers, but please stop over-doing it with the hashtags. The thing about people and hashtags is that they tag so many generic things such as #beauty #food #art that their pictures end up getting lost in a sea of hundreds of thousands of pictures. Not only are the tags generic, but sometimes people go overboard, tagging one picture with way too many of them. The first few tags always seem to relate to the picture, but after the fifth one, things start to take a turn for the completely irrelevant. A simple picture of someone eating a grape can have tags ranging from #fruit and #grape to #fingers and #curlyhair. (*buries face in palm) Please cut it out.
  2. Too many selfies: I guess I’m pretty guilty of this one too but, nonetheless, people who post way too many selfies should probably cool out a bit. Not only does it annoy me when I look at someone’s profile and all I see are selfies, but it makes it way worse when all I see is the person making the same face or posing the same way in every single one. Selfies can come off as being a little narcissistic; you’re pretty, we get it! You don’t have to keep reminding us every time you post something.
  3. Over-posting: We all follow that one person who mysteriously disappears from our timelines for a while before suddenly deciding to have an impromptu photo shoot with his/herself, all while posting every single SELFIE on Instagram. I would have to say that of all things that I can’t stand about Instagram, over-posting takes the cake. My timeline gets flooded daily with people who purposely do such things to annoy their followers. If you post more than five pictures in one day (especially if they are all posted within an hour’s timespan), I would recommend seeking professional help. Just saying.
  4. Struggle meals: Some people are forgetting that it is, in fact, possible to eat a meal without posting a picture of it on Instagram. (I’m talking to you 2 Chainz) It’s great to post a picture of a beautiful, gourmet meal that you don’t really come across very often, but please spare me from having to scroll past random concoctions of food that were put together with everything you had left in your pantry. “Makeshift pizza” does not look appetizing to me. Make it stop please.
  5. Your nails: It’s simple- I really don’t care about what design you decided to get on your pointy, cat woman nails this week. I just don’t. And I’m pretty sure no one else does either.
  6. Copying celebrities: If I see another @badgal(insert random name here), I might just scream. Ever since Rihanna created the name badgalriri and even when Beyoncé finally joined us on The Gram with the name baddiebey, I’ve seen way too many duplicates of their names. And not only do people imitate their usernames, they even go as far as trying to recreate their most popular pictures, i.e. Rihanna’s oh-so-risqué Unapologetic album cover. There is a fine line between glamorous and just plain ghetto. Leave the shirtless pictures to the professionals.
