Lyndsey Jackson: Promoting Diversity

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

There are people who enjoy being involved at UGA, and then there are people who dedicated themselves to helping others get involved too. Read on to see how Lyndsey Jackson and Georgia Daze are helping promote inclusion on campus!

KL: What’s your year and major?

LJ: I am a third-year public relations and Spanish major from Fayetteville, GA. I am also pursuing the new media certificate.

KL: What’s your favorite Athens restaurant?

LJ: My favorite Athens restaurant is Cali-n-Titos. The restaurant has always been in walking (or bus!) distance from my dorms making it convenient, inexpensive and tasty for me and my friends. I always order the fish tacos, a side of maduros completed with limeade.

KL: Where’s your favorite study spot, on or off campus?

LJ: My favorite study spot is the fourth floor of the main library – the room is colorful, spacious and you can even write on the walls! However, as a Grady student, I am also a big fan of studying in the NMI in between classes.

KL: What’s your go-to karaoke song?

LJ: My go-to karaoke song is anything by Queen Bey, preferably the B-Day album. Who doesn’t love to belt out Déjà Vu?!

KL: What are you involved in on campus?

LJ: On campus, I am involved with the Student Alumni Council, TEDxUGA, the Georgia Daze Minority Recruitment Program and PRSSA. I enjoy being able to give back to UGA and interact with my peers through organizations. Being involved gives me a chance to meet new people I may not have met otherwise while gaining new experiences.

KL: What is Georgia Daze?

Georgia Daze is an overnight campus visitation program for high school seniors that have been admitted to UGA. Since 2004, the program aims to encourage talented, historically underrepresented students to enroll at the University of Georgia. Throughout the school year, Georgia Daze host programs and provides recruitment and community service opportunities to promote diversity and inclusion on the University of Georgia campus.

KL: Could you tell me a little more about your personal Georgia Daze experience?

My Georgia Daze experience began the spring of my senior year of high school. I was invited for an extended weekend stay at UGA through the program. I was introduced to various organizations and met my best friend. Georgia Daze helped to solidify my choice to attend UGA and continue to work with the program. After three years, I’ve been able to host my own student for a weekend and serve on the executive board.

KL: What event do you have coming up?

Georgia Daze is partnering with the Zeta Pi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated to present Exposé: An All White Affair. During the social networking event, which will be held at Memorial Hall on September 9 from 6 to 9 p.m., attendees will be brought together in celebration of success, creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit. It’s truly a fun event connecting current students with alumni. Plus, there’ll be great fun and fun giveaways!

KL: Anything else you want to share with me?

Getting involved on campus has truly made my experience at UGA worthwhile. From recruitment, event planning to preparing for my future career, I owe so much to organizations and the friends I’ve made at the university.

Thanks so much for sharing with us, Lyndsey! If you’re interested in checking out Exposé, you can get tickets online through Eventbrite.
