Films & TV Series to Catch During Spring Break

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Spring break is just around the corner, but while you’re hitting the beach or the road, don’t forget to watch out for Netflix releases and upcoming blockbusters.

Jessica Jones Season 2 (March 9th)

The Marvel Netflix release-season is taking off again, this year starting with season two of Jessica Jones that we have all been waiting for since 2015. After the ending of The Defenders this past fall, fans have been left to wonder what is in store for our favorite poorly-coping, yet most-relatable hero. The latest reviews have claimed that the second season has set Marvel’s bar low for Netflix shows, but some people just aren’t appreciating Jessica right, obviously.

A Wrinkle in Time (March 9th)

The soon-to-be box office hit is probably a movie most of you have been waiting for some time now. This magical movie is a great follow-up to February’s hit of Black Panther with its diverse cast including actresses such as Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, but most importantly, everyone, kids included, will enjoy the leading lady, Storm Reid. This spring’s superhero and kid’s movies are going to have this Halloween looking wicked.

Thoroughbreds (March 9th)

This drama thriller might be lesser known than the movies it’s going up against this month, but take one look at the trailer and you won’t want to miss out. The movie stars Anya Taylor-Joy, who some of you might know from Split, along with Olivia Cooke from Bates Motel. Cue a plot set in suburban Connecticut where these upper-class teens decide to solve their problems with a little plot-device called murder. Getting the Heathers vibe yet?

Did we mention the film also includes the always-lovable, late Anton Yelchin? Now you can’t miss out.

Tomb Raider (March 16th)

This early-spring blockbuster is a film we’ve all been waiting for. Whether you’re a lover of the video games, Angelina Jolie’s films, or both, the time has come to finally join Lara Croft again. According to Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of fans are ready to see Alicia Vikander taking on the role of the English archeologist. Vikander has already tackled iconic, action work in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and with Lara’s iconic braid, she’s sure to make this film break the box office.

Love, Simon (March 16th)

This page-to-screen will probably have some getting nostalgic for The Perks of Being a Wildflower, but this more light-hearted film will definitely turn more heads with its “controversial” plot about a gay, seventeen-year-old boy. While this movie may not draw in the older crowd, the younger crowd will definitely appreciate familiar faces like Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why), Miles Heizer (13 Reasons Why), and Keiynan Lonsdale (The Flash). Seeing Josh Duhamel as another dorky dad is just another plus to seeing this wonderful, coming of age story that puts the LGBTQA+ community in a positive and relatable light.

Notable Post-Break Hits

Pacific Rim Uprising (March 23rd)

That’s right, after five whole years, Pacific Rim is finally back.

If you thought the last movie was great, get ready for an even greater ride with John Boyega as a frontrunner of the film. Although our beloved Pentecost is gone, seeing both of his kids in action will more than make up for our loss. That’s right, John Boyega AND Rinko Kikuchi. With some comedy relief from Charlie Day, this blockbuster will more than tide us over ’til the summer.

The Series of Unfortunate Events Season 2 (March 30th)

The Baudelaires are back, and while they may not be happy about it, we most definitely are. This new season has been promised to be far more villainous, and while we aren’t sure if we want that for the kids, it’s going to be a lot more fun watching the villains amp up their game. Maybe this round, someone should try making a game out of how many times adults just don’t listen to children.

Whether you’re taking road trips or staying home for this Spring Break, you’ll have something to look forward to on those rainy days or every day. Keep an eye on the box office, and your Netflix, and you might even find some more gems headed our way.
