5 Reasons You Should Adopt a Pet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Here a few great reasons to consider adpoting your next furry friend!

1. They are just so darn cute!

How can you say no to the amazingly sweet eyes of a puppy or kitty that desperately needs a home?!

2. It’s cheaper than purchasing one from a breeder or pet shop.

These animals want love, and the people who run the shelter want to get them into a great home! With that being said, there’s usually (if not always) a fee to adopt a pet from a shelter or sanctuary. This fee usually covers the first round of shots, a microchip and the spaying or neutering of the animal. It can also be used by the shelter or sanctuary to aid in the saving of other fluffy lives!

3. You are in fact saving a life!

Many of these animals have either been abused or neglected, born into the shelter because their mom was abused or neglected, or taken away from someone who could not properly care for them. Most come from kill shelters where they are essentially on death row. By adopting, you’re saving an animal from death as well as freeing up a spot for the shelter to rescue another animal from a kill shelter.

4. Animals are therapeutic

As someone who suffers from anxiety, I don’t know where I would be without my adopted kitties. They calm me down after a long day, and it has been proven that petting an animal can reduce stress and calm the mind.

5. You support people who do a TON of good.

In Athens, my favorite place to visit and volunteer is the Athens Area Humane Society. They are a great bunch of people who do wonderful work rescuing animals. Even if you cannot commit to adopting, they always love for people to come in and volunteer. You can play with the puppies and kitties they have available, which is a great way to relieve stress and socialize the animals!

So go volunteer, adopt, or just spread the news! Adpotion is the way to go!

Hi, my name is Rachel! I am a 4th year student at the University of Georgia studying English. My goal is to become a Special Education English teacher. I enjoy music, movies, her two cats, and hiking with her boyfriend in the mountains of North Georgia. Currently I work at a local school in their After School program, interacting and tutoring Middle School children. I have a passion for animals and someday hope to open my own animal rescue. My kitties, Calypso and Harley, are my heart and have really helped me develop a passion for helping animals in need.
