5 Reasons to Love Your 8 A.M. Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Many times, our college schedule does not look exactly like we planned it. Courses here at UGA fill up quickly, which means you may be stuck taking a freshman seminar at 8 AM with mandatory attendance. These early classes are dreaded by most students, so few are willing to take them. If you are one of the unlucky ones, here are 5 reasons to actually enjoy them!

Reason 1: Dining Halls are Less Crowded

Usually, in Village Summit, you have to search high and low for a table until you end up at a back corner of the dining room. However, at 9:20 AM after getting off the bus from an 8 AM class, you won’t have to wait in long lines at the omelet station or fight for a place to sit. As you are settling down for a nice “home-cooked” breakfast, everyone else is running to the bus to make their first class. Having the time to sit and relax before your next class is well worth the early alarm!

Reason 2: Buses are Less Crowded

Anyone who rides a UGA bus knows how many people actually attend this school. Every bus stop adds more and more people and few ever get off. Every student has had their fair share of coming face to face with someone’s book bag or someone’s armpit. With a campus as big as UGA, few people can manage to get from class to class without taking the bus. If you want to reduce your chance of having an encounter with an armpit, taking an 8 AM can be a great solution.

Reason 3: Quiet Time in the Morning

If you have a roommate who does not have an 8 AM, then you are guaranteed some quiet time in the morning. Sometimes it is hard to get alone time when sharing living space with someone. If you are used to having your own room at home, then sharing a room with a ‘complete stranger’ could be a drastic change, so having this time in the morning will help you mentally prepare for the day.

Reason 4: Get to Start Your Day Early

Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough time to do everything you want to do? Having a 8 AM class can leave you feeling more productive. Hearing that alarm in the morning may sound like the worst way to interrupt your dreams about Peter Kavinsky, however, once you fully wake up, you slowly start to forget how early it is. The day seems so much longer, in a good way. Getting one class over with by 9:15 AM can make your day feel more meaningful by mentally checking off one task early in the morning. If you only have two classes, then you are halfway done! You will have the rest of your day to do whatever you please, whether that means going to a club meeting or just going back to your dorm to sleep. Taking that 8 AM class will give you the time to do just that.

Reason 5: Bonding Experience

The girl behind you, the guy next to you—everyone in your class is in the same boat. They all had to wake up early and are probably daydreaming about their bed. You could bond over your lack of sleep and make it through the course together. Who knows, your future best friend may be sitting next to you. Often times you are taking classes with people inside your major so you are constantly interacting with one another. All it takes is one person to introduce themselves and boom, lifelong friendship. Okay maybe it doesn’t happen like that, but it could! College is a great place to meet new people and having an 8 AM could be the gateway to starting new relationships.

We know that 8 AM’s aren’t for everyone! Hopefully, these reasons helped you see your class schedule in a more optimistic way!
