Something about springtime always makes me want to redecorate – and one of the best ways to change up a space and make it brighter is to add a plant! If you’re like me and can have trouble keeping plants alive, here’s some great starter plants that thankfully don’t die very easily but still make a big difference in your room. Make sure you’ve got a space cleared where a plant can get sunlight, but past that, the size and pot of the plant is all up to you! Get crafty with some paint and a pot from Home Depot or support a local business like Indie South and look out for these plants when you’re shopping.

Cacti

If you’ve got a window that gets tons of light, a cactus would be perfect—they require minimal attention and come in tons of shapes, sizes, and colors.

Succulents

Hear me out—these are technically different from cacti (although cacti are a kind of succulent). Succulents are plants that store water in fleshy leaves, so plants like aloe vera are included. These guys are great because there’s tons of variety between plants and different species can be planted in the same pot together.

Air Plants

Half of the fun of air plants is picking out a super cool “pot” to go along with it! Since these don’t need a bunch of soil, there are some really cool glass and macrame options that can be hung from the ceiling. They just need a spritz of water every once in a while and they’re good.

Spider Plants

This is the most traditional houseplant I’m going to recommend because yes—it needs a bigger pot and more frequent watering than the others, but it’s pretty low maintenance overall in the grand scheme of the plant kingdom. Plus, they’ll start growing “spiderettes” when they’re mature that can be repotted and become a whole new plant.

This is your sign that you need a plant in your life—go get one! You’ll be just like those plant mom TikTokkers in no time.
