12 Random Holidays You Wish You Had Known About Sooner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

We have all heard of National Margarita Day, National Pizza Day, and a few other random noteworthy holidays that give us great excuses to go out with our friends and celebrate the things that we truly love.  There are many other holidays that deserve a shoutout for helping get us through the years, and these are just a few of them.

January 8 – National Bubble Bath Day

When that winter chill is too strong and you just haven’t gotten over the post-Christmas blues, this is the day that you have been waiting for. This is the day that you can lock yourself in your bathroom with your candles and a glass of wine while you sit in the tub and ignore all the wrapping paper that you still haven’t put away yet.

February 13 – Get a Different Name Day

If your New Year’s Resolution has to do with completely changing who you are, well this is a day to further complete that resolution. Apparently there has to be a day that allows you to change your name. So whether you’re recreating yourself from “Madeline” to “Madi” or you’re just tired of people mispronouncing your name, this is your time to shine.

March 22 – International Goof Off Day

Just after St. Patrick’s Day when people goofed off all night, there is now a full day that it is allowed. It can be a day of practicing the real pranks that you have planned from April Fool’s Day or just being a little less serious than usual.

April 14 – International Moment of Laughter Day

Now this day is a time to be happy. This is a day to just enjoy life and laugh a little more at things just because you need something to help lighten the mood in the office.

May 11 – Eat What You Want Day

This is just another day to give up on working at that “perfect bikini body.” Right before you have to put on that swimsuit to go to the pool, eat a pint of ice cream with a large pile of french fries. I promise that one day of eating what you want will not kill you or make you gain the 20 pounds that you think it will.

June 18 – National Splurge Day

It’s time to treat yo’ self. As you feel like you’re melting in the summer heat, take a moment to treat yourself to that ice cream, or turn your AC up a little more than usual. You’ve probably done something to deserve this treat, and if you haven’t, just do it anyways.

July 17 – National Ice Cream Day

Maybe it’s just me, but ice cream is the treat of choice at my house, and to have a whole day devoted to it is everything that I have ever dreamed of, so chase down that ice cream truck and enjoy yourself.

August 15 – National Relaxation Day

By now you’ve probably just started school again and have already been in classes for a day, therefore, you deserve a break. If drop/add week has you struggling to get out of bed, it’s ok. Just stay in and finish that Netflix series that you started over the summer.

September 17 – National Eat an Apple / Apple Dumpling Day

Now that you have binged on ice cream and treated yourself over the past few months, it’s time to change it up. As they say, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and right before Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, this might actually be for our own good.

October 7 – World Smile Day

Apparently it’s unfair to have an International Day of Laughter and International Good Off Day but no World Smile Day, so here it is. Whether it be a genuine smile at a stranger or a more maniacal smile as you think of the punch that you will be making at your Halloween party, take a moment to loosen up.

November 13 – World Kindness Day

After killing your friends with whatever mad potion you made on Halloween, be kind and try to invite them back for a Friendsgiving. Try to repair the damage that was done from Halloween, even though you know that it will happen again next year.

December 4 – National Cookie Day

There is nothing that screams Christmas time more than cookies. Today is the day to start the baking! It can officially mark the beginning of the season and give you and excuse to bake cookies, or just eat the dough.

A Couple Other Noteworthy Holidays

July 27 – Take Your Plants for a Walk Day

I know… I couldn’t believe this was a real thing either.

December 16 – National Chocolate Covered Anything Day

I was more confused that this needed to be a holiday since this is just the motto of how most people live their lives

I am a sophomore at the University of Georgia pursuing a degree in Journalism with a minor in Art History. I love traveling to Atlanta to spend days at Ponce City Market, or just traveling anywhere with great food and cool street art.
