Wednesday Wisdom: 6 Ways to Make Your Summer Count

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

For me, summer always flies by and I find myself thinking, “I wish I could do it over again and make more time to do things I didn’t have time for.” This summer, I’m vowing to take advantage of every opportunity I’m given and turn free time into a time to do something memorable. Here are some ideas on how to make the most of it!

1. Get a job or internship.
This might not be the most glamorous way to spend your vacation, but summer is the perfect time to make some extra money so you can splurge when you come back to school! Now you never have to worry about running out of money on your Starbucks card.

2. Learn something new.
Whether you want to try your green thumb to see if you have what it takes to plant a garden or if you’ve always wanted to learn how to surf, summer is a perfect time to try it out. Use your free time to discover a new passion or learn a new skill. You never know when you will learn how to do something that interests you and that you can use as you enter the next stage of life and beyond.

3. Go somewhere unexpected.
There aren’t many times when you’ll have three months of uninterrupted time. Take a road trip cross-country to see what life is like on the West Coast. Fly out of the country and backpack your way through Europe. You can even find hidden treasures a few miles away from your house if you look hard enough.

4. Take somebody with you.
Grab a friend and experience these new places together. Life is always more fun when you have special people by your side. Make your Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants travel dreams come true and take a vacation with your BFFs that you will always remember.

5. Volunteer.
Use the summertime to get involved in your community. Many organizations are looking for part-time helpers, whether you’re passionate about mentoring kids or making your city more beautiful. Not only will volunteer work look great on your resume, but it can also be an inspiring and rewarding experience.

6. Enjoy yourself.
We can’t help how stressful our classes are during the school year, but we can take each day this summer and make it a great time. Remember to embrace the wonderful life experiences. Do something you don’t normally have time to do and you won’t regret it!
