From Sisters to Mothers: The Kardashian-Jenners

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

You don’t have to watch Keeping Up with the Kardashians to be aware of the Kardashians. The clan of marketing masterminds is everywhere. They’re on TV. They’re on the internet. They’re all over the tabloids and social media. People have spent years praising and complaining about the Kardashians. But does that stop them? No, it’s like they eat gossip for breakfast. Even with the rumors they come out stronger and more supportive of each other than ever. Despite your opinions on the Kardashians, everyone can learn something from them about empowering the women in their lives.

I will be the first to admit that I don’t follow the Kardashians. At all. But, do I love indulging in whatever the latest comes from the rumor mill? Of course! If you’ve been in tune with pop culture you’ll know that Kim’s surrogate just had Kimye’s baby girl, Khloe is pregnant and Kylie might be pregnant as well. Being famous and being pregnant is hard enough with people asking questions and wanting to know about your private life, but imagine them asking questions about your sisters’ private lives? Especially if you want the attention but it’s constantly being diverted to someone else. Can you imagine? One of the biggest moments of your life and someone wants to know about your sibling or your BFF.

Surprisingly, the Kardashians are handling it surprisingly well. Though it may be a publicity scheme, each sister has given the other their turn in the limelight. Stories about Kim and Kanye’s surrogate had been published, then Khloe announced her pregnancy. While stories leading up to Chicago West’s delivery date have been released, Khloe has remained in the soft glow of the spotlight. In fact, while the rumors about Kylie’s pregnancy have probably done wonders for the Kardashian’s PR and sales, Kylie nor her family will speak on the topic.

Each sister has rotated the media and attention, and none of them will expose the other’s situation. It would be too easy for one of the Kardashian-Jenners to “accidentally” leak something about Kylie’s pregnancy and mass hysteria would follow. The Kardashian-Jenner brand would boom. Imagine all the Kylie Lip Kits that would sell. But instead of easily capitalizing on what drama would ensue, they support her in silence.

The most supportive, and not so silent, Kardashian-Jenner is the ultimate matriarch, Kris Jenner. Many believe the OG marketing queen exploited her girls, but let’s be real. All of them realized what they were doing and Kris wanted to make sure that they cashed in on it. One could even argue that the Kardashian-Jenners wouldn’t be where they are today without her. And if you doubt her support, just look at her social media. She is always promoting (I mean posting) about her kids.

Kris, you’re doing amazing, sweetie. Truly.

Even when the Kardashian-Jenners are not doing so amazing they’re always there for each other. Kim was there for Kendall when they were both having anxiety. They were all there for Kendall when she was experiencing bad press and didn’t know how to recover or manage the backlash. And, honestly, that’s just what we see through the cameras. Behind the scenes they probably share more hugs, tears and sage advice than we will ever know.

Being a woman in 2018, I hate to say it, is grueling. And though female celebrities are experiencing a renaissance of freedom, there is still an immense amount of pressure and expectations coming from everyone.

Regardless if you’re a celebrity or not, in life you need at least one person in your corner at all times who’s there for you with no expectations. Someone who understands what you’re going through and loves you despite it all. The Kardashian-Jenners know this all too well. So, they’re there for each other, and they know how to keep it real.

Actually, Kourtney Kardashian is the best at keeping it real. She keeps all the girls in check by letting them know what’s up about everything from when they’ve missed the bigger picture to when they’re doing something amazing.

Honestly, I’m not here to tell you to keep up with the Kardashians. In fact, don’t. But don’t speak poorly of them when you can clearly learn from them. They are a group of strong women who are always there for each other. They have their ups and downs like every other family, but that’s what makes their relationships real. So, the next time you groan or cackle over a tweet from a Kardashian-Jenner backing up the other try to think of the last time you did that for one of your girls. Look past the hype and negativity and take away the lessons of how you could be supporting the women in your life.
