A few weeks ago, my lovely roommate LG and I moved into our cozy new pad on the edge of the Gator Nation’s campus. Immediately, we were looking for ways to make our space more welcoming and cheerful.

This week, I’m going to show you how LG and I restyled our drab flat to something more personalized. Monogrammed plaques are a great update to your fabulous new home away from home!

Start out by visiting your local craft store to purchase a few supplies:

1. Wooden Plaques. The craft store has all kinds of sizes and variations to suit your needs! We decided on two plaques with rounded corners that are a little more than 9 inches by 12 inches. They were just large enough to put our respective monograms on, but you can also spell out a name or paint on a cute quote.

2. Paint and brushes. Pick out some cute colors to match your style and your soon-to-be lavishly decorated abode. We chose to do pink and green, but I also love the idea of using a variety of colors to make it the focal point of your chosen room.

3. Creativity. Have fun with this project! Be adventurous and try something new. Paint your plaque to fit your personality, and in no time you will have a savvy update to make your place appealing and refreshed. You can always find inspiration on the Internet, from friends or in magazines.

For our plaques, I first painted on the base coat of pink. It’s good to do at least two coats so that the base isn’t streaky. I then traced a palm tree on to both since my roommate and I really love all things to do with the Florida beach lifestyle.

After that, we were ready for our monograms. It’s best to sketch out in pencil before painting your chosen expression – that way, if for some reason you change your mind, you can always paint over the design and start again. Let them dry overnight, then attach a ribbon to hang them by, and you’re all set!

Isn’t crafting a beautiful thing? Personalizing your home is a great way to make your space feel entirely yours, even if it is just for a semester! This project is especially great for if you’re living in a dorm—what better way than to bond with your new roommate than over making cute decorations for your new space?
