Quotes n’ Notes: Gloria Steinem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Far too many people are looking for the right person instead of trying to be the right person.- Gloria Steinem

Spring has sprung, collegiettes, and it’s time to get back to our regular schedules. In the chaos of school, work, extracurricular activities, and social lives, it’s so easy to feel like we don’t have our lives together. Us girls need “me time” to lay in bed and watch “One Tree Hill” episodes over and over again until our eyes are out of tears and it hurts to laugh because it’s just that good. We need blankets and an endless supply of Ben & Jerry’s. We need time to plan out our schedules, and we need time to just sit and think.

When we do have time to relax and reflect, our minds often go to wanting what we don’t have. This is natural; if you feel a void in your life, your instincts tell you to try to figure out the reason why. And, often, the reason is you’re missing that one thing that truly makes everything better: love.

It happens all the time. You decide that the void is there because of something you’re doing wrong, so you try to change yourself into someone who (you think) is a better you. You think you must be the problem because everyone around you seems to be dating someone. You find yourself searching for flaws to place the blame on for not having love in your life, and it’s hard to shake these critical thoughts from your mind. It’s hard, but you have to do it because, until you do, you’ll keep searching and coming up short.

You have to step back and work on loving yourself because you are unique and beautiful, and you have to believe that before anyone else can. When it’s time for you to experience the greatest gift life has to offer, you will. When it’s your time to have love in your life with the right guy, you will. Instead of focusing on finding the right person to love, focus on being the person you love being, and, eventually, someone will love you just for being that person — just for being you. When you’re where you need to be in your life to love yourself as much as someone else loves you, it’ll be all you’ve been searching for and more.
