The Pros & Cons of Having a Pet in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

About a month into college students often go through the “I want a pet” stage. But before making any life-altering decisions, you should definitely consider all that goes with a pet. Here are some of my pros and cons to owning an animal while in college:

PRO: You own a pet This means 24/7 cuddles. Pets are the best because they love and adore you no matter what. Who wouldn’t want four legs and fur to follow them around the house?

CON: Pets are expensive You can say goodbye to that new Michael Kors watch you were saving up for. Now there are veterinarian bills to pay and pet food to buy. The animal adoption fees can also be very hefty!

PRO: Your new little buddy can be used to get you a hot date Who says only guys can use this age-old trick? Walking through Turlington Plaza with your pup will surely capture some wanted attention. Guys and gals will flock to pet and adore your fluff muffin. Who knows, you and your dog may get a date to the dog park with a cute guy and his four-legged companion.

CON: Pets require a lot of attention You can no longer be gone all day because your animal needs to be fed and let outside. Even if you have a cat, you have a responsibility to make sure it always has fresh litter. No more last-minute study sessions at Library West.

PRO: Pets are great conversation-starters and Instagram-fillersPeople with pets have a strange bond. They can go on and on talking about their furry friends to one another. Now you can join the club and start gushing about every movement your pet makes. Plus, you’ll always have the best pictures to post online. We love the HC National office pup’s Instagram account (@missbellaboop_)

CON: Like all other living things, pets will pass away one day It might sound blunt, but this is a simple fact all pet owners have to be aware of. If you can’t handle it, then you probably shouldn’t have a pet.

Take these pros and cons into consideration before you get a pet. Your new pal may just turn out to be your new best friend (goodbye human interaction), or if you’re like me, you may only be able to handle a beta fish. If you do decide to adopt, you should consider adopting from Alachua County Humane Society or Gainesville Pet Rescue.
