The Podcasts ‘True Crime’ Fans Should Be Listening To

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Podcasts are like TV for your ears. You can listen to them while driving, putting on makeup or doing dishes. Meaningless tasks now become entertaining. Now how about doing those tasks while being on the edge of your seat. If you are a fan of “True Crime,” you need these mysterious, fascinating and creepy stories in your life. Here are the perfect podcasts for your crime crave.

1. Criminal

I recently just started listening to “Criminal,” and this podcast talks a lot about random and weird crimes you wouldn’t think about. It makes you ask yourself questions you didn’t think you would have. In one episode,it talks about animal law and if animals could be tried for crimes. Or in another episode, it brought light to the crime of poaching venus fly traps. These are random but very interesting crime topics that you would not think about normally.  Each episode is about 20 minutes, so they are quick and easy to listen to while getting ready. This podcast is best suited for people who like light and non-scary crime stories.

2. Sword and Scale

If you are looking for a really creepy and dark podcast, then “Sword and Scale” is perfect for you. This podcast mainly talks about serious crimes like murder and reveals that “the worst monsters are real.” Sword and Scale is not afraid to take it to the next step. The host, Mike Boudet, has a smooth and relaxing yet ominous voice. He gives all of the details. All of them. It’s as eerie as it sounds. The podcast sometimes plays 911 calls and recorded court tapes to make you feel immersed in the story. This podcast is best suited for people who love sinister tales and long car rides.

3. My Favorite Murder

This is the podcast that got me into podcasts. “My Favorite Murder” is not only fascinating, but it’s also hilarious. I don’t know how hosts Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark make a serious topic like murder funny. But they do. And it’s great. In every episode they each pick either a well-known or uncommon murderer to talk about and discuss their crime. The two comedians’ chemistry and love for true crime makes this podcast what it is. They have many hilarious quotes that have stuck such as “You’re in a cult, call your dad” and their closer “Stay sexy, and don’t get murdered.” They have even coined the word “murderino” which is a person who is interested in true crime and murder. Karen and Georgia are so successful they quit their day jobs to tour the country doing live episodes. I actually was lucky enough to go to their show in Orlando, Florida, and it was better than going to a concert. This podcast is best suited for people who love comedy and also people interested in knowing more stories about unknown murderers.

“True Crime” fans have always been around, but these podcasts have become a welcoming place for people to connect, listen and discuss crime. I was never really interested in podcasts because they seemed boring to me, but they’re like books in the sense you just have to find the genre you like. Podcasts make folding laundry and cleaning your bedroom ten times more fun. On your next long car ride take a listen to a thrilling true crime story.
