Pin it or Pass: A Gator Valentine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Valentine’s Day can be awkward. Whether you are dating someone without being “Facebook official” or you have a crush but don’t want to be too forward, finding the right Valentine’s gift can be a chore. A gift that’s too romantic has the potential to backfire and leave your man turned off rather than turned on.

To find the gift to say, “I care enough to make you something, but I’m not expecting an engagement ring,” I’ve searched Pinterest to share, what I think, is a pin worth sharing.

This Pinterest find could be great for your Gator-loving valentine (or hopeful valentine). It can be filled with candy or a cute personal note. But how long does a pin like this take? Depending on how much time you’re willing to spend, maybe picking up a card from CVS is more your speed. Regardless, I’ve been holding on to this pin for a while waiting for Valentine’s Day to roll around just so I could attempt it.

I started with one sheet of green, 78-cent scrapbooking paper. I’m sure regular paper would work just fine, but scrapbooking paper will be a little sturdier when holding the candy inside, and it also offers a little bit of texture. You will need to cut out four arms, two trapezoids, one triangle and one flattened cylinder. So far, this pin seems easy enough…

Step 1: Glue one end of the cylinder to the other.
Step 2: Let dry.
Step 3: Fold in the end semi-circles into the tube.
Step 4: Glue your triangle on top.

These steps weren’t too difficult, but I became concerned when I was gluing it together because it seemed too small to fit anything inside. If you decide this pin is for you, make sure to cut your shapes larger; I had to learn the hard way.

Next, glue your two trapezoids on the top and bottom to make the gator head. And what’s a gator without legs? Glue the legs on the bottom, and let them dry.

Woo-hoo, time for the fun part: stickers! Once I put on the stickers, I glued on a pink mouth with the phrase, “I’d snap at the chance to be your Valentine.” I’m sure there are other creative and cute gator phrases you could come up with, though. Don’t forget to throw on some cute googly eyes, too!

Here is the finished product. What do you think? Although I think this pin is cute, I’m not sure I would be willing to make another one. Would you believe me if I said this took more two hours to make!? Maybe he would appreciate a purchased card just as much. But more importantly, this gator Valentine holder can’t hold much. Make sure you make your gator larger than mine, or your man might think you are hinting for him to lose some weight.

Rating: 3 out of 5 pins
This pin is cute but way too time consuming. Willing to spend the time to impress your man? Then maybe this pin is for you.
What do you think ladies? Would you pin it, or pass it?
