Outskirts Of Gainesville: The Best Hidden Gems

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

I think it’s extremely important to support local businesses when possible, especially now more than ever before. There are so many amazing small businesses to support in the heart of Gainesville, but what about those in the surrounding areas?

I live about an hour away from campus, so I’m familiar with some of the best places to go in the small cities near Gainesville, like High Springs, Williston, Newberry and Alachua. These hometown areas are definitely small, but they each have at least one hidden gem to offer. It’s been so much fun to take the time to explore these towns, and it’s always exciting to discover a new favorite business to support.

Here are a few of my favorite places near Gainesville that you need to check out.

Villaggio’s Pizzeria

If you love New York-style pizza, Villaggio’s Pizzeria in Newberry is the place for you. Located at 179 SW 250 St., this restaurant is a complete hole in the wall, but I promise you it’s delicious. After hearing so many good reviews about Villaggio’s, my boyfriend and I decided to go one day. And it did not disappoint! This is now one of our go-to places for an affordable date night. They have amazing pizzas, subs, calzones, pasta dishes and desserts. Our personal favorite is the chicken parmesan pizza, complete with a piece of Tiramisu cake.

Rum 138

Another hidden gem, Rum 138 in Fort White, Florida, makes kayaking easy. They offer shuttle services and kayak rentals, which make the process so much smoother.

You can choose from a few different routes and starting points, and you’ll always see something interesting. Along the Santa Fe River, you’ll observe beautiful springs, like Gilchrist Blue and Ginnie Springs. You’re also bound to see amazing wildlife, especially turtles that love to lounge on logs. Kayaking with Rum 138 is a great way to get in touch with nature, enjoy the sunshine and have a relaxing day.

The Talented Cookie Company

Located in High Springs, The Talented Cookie Company is an adorable small-town bakery and coffee shop. The Talented Cookie has a large amount of indoor and outdoor seating that makes great study spots, so you can get work done while enjoying something delicious. They offer a variety of coffees and a huge selection of desserts and treats. My personal favorite is their snickerdoodle cookie, but everything I’ve tried has been amazing.

Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens

Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens is a beautiful botanical garden, home to more than 50 garden displays and breathtaking views. Originally a lime rock quarry, the property has been transformed into a fantasy land of islands, pavilions, flora and greenery.

Admission is $12 per person and you are highly encouraged to bring your camera to take pictures of the stunning gardens. I also recommend packing a picnic lunch to enjoy under the gazebos. If you love nature, I highly recommend visiting Cedar Lakes Woods and Gardens to enjoy the waterfalls, wildlife and flowers.

Red, White and Blues Farm

Red, White and Blues Farm is a family-owned and operated U-Pick and commercial blueberry farm in Williston. The U-Pick season for guests to handpick tasty berries is normally open around the beginning or middle of April, and it’s so much fun.

The farm offers seven different types of blueberries, ranging from sweet to sour. They also have a cafe and picnic tables where you can enjoy a small lunch. Or, you can visit their general store and pick up my favorites: a blueberry slush and a blueberry donut. Red, White and Blues Farm is a great place to visit during a nice spring day to enjoy the sunshine and fun treats!

Mill Creek Farm

Mill Creek Farm is probably my favorite hidden gem of all. I’ve lived near Alachua my entire life and had never heard about Mill Creek Farm until my boyfriend and I started dating. After our first trip there, I fell in love with the business (and the boy).

Mill Creek Farm is a non-profit retirement home for horses, where lifelong care is provided to elderly horses that have been abandoned, neglected or abused. The admission fee is “two carrots,” but donations are highly encouraged.

It’s recommended that you bring a 5-pound bag of carrots or something else for the horses to enjoy, like apples or bananas. During your trip, you’ll have the chance to feed the horses whatever treat you bring and give them a lot of love. Mill Creek Farm is also home to some miniature horses and donkeys. I highly recommend visiting Mill Creek Farm!

The outskirts of Gainesville are home to a lot of amazing small businesses. If you can drive out of our college town, I highly recommend paying a few of these places a visit. Each of the businesses and non-profits listed above has something interesting and unique to offer. Don’t forget to support locals and try out new businesses when you have the chance.
