Lessons to Live By: 5 Things to Learn from Honey Boo Boo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Having taken the reality TV world by storm, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” is more than guilty pleasure television; it’s TV to live by. Now before you call me crazy, hear me out. Although Honey Boo Boo has been the punch line in just about every joke for the past year,  we can learn a thing or two from this little diva. Under that layer of glitz and cheese balls is a heart of gold, full-of-life lessons to live by.

1. “Show the judges your belly!”

I’m not saying its OK to eat an entire tub of cheese balls, but young women need to accept their figures. Honey Boo Boo is not ashamed of being a little pudgy, so neither should you. There is so much emphasis on being a size zero, and that just isn’t possible for a lot of us. When that dreaded swimsuit season rolls around, or when you’re convinced everything would look better when you’re 5 pounds thinner, do the Boo — look in a mirror, and say how fabulous you look. Putting on a tiara wouldn’t hurt either.

2. Be more accepting:

I’m sure many of us have found ourselves to be a little judgmental at some point. If there is anything to learn from Honey Boo Boo, it’s to be more accepting of people who are different. I mean, look at her family. If a 6-year-old beauty queen can look at someone who is a little on the quirky side and not pass judgment, then you can try to be open to new ideas as well. For example, when Honey Boo Boo talks about her “Uncle Poodle” who is gay, she is wise beyond her years in saying “love is love.”

3. “A dolla makes me holla”:

Sure we all like to “get mooonneeyyyyyyy,” but Honey Boo Boo also likes the simple things in life, like playing in mud and bobbing for pig’s feet. You will never see her on the show bragging about expensive things or being ashamed of what she has (or doesn’t have). She loves to be thrifty, and so does her coupon-queen Mama, so lets try not to focus on name brands. It’s easy to become materialistic, but take it from Honey Boo Boo: keep yourself grounded.

4. Don’t give up:

Lets face it, Glitzy has a better chance of being crowned “Ultimate Grand Supreme.”

But that hasn’t stopped Honey Boo Boo from trying. Sometime we get so caught up in failure that we stop doing things we love. I’m sure lots of people have told Honey Boo Boo it’s time to retire the flipper, but she hasn’t let public opinion steer her away from pageants just yet. If we can learn anything from Miss Honey Boo Boo, it’s to push ourselves to do better the next time and not give up on dreams just because they are far-fetched.

5. Look on the bright side:

Pageants for Honey Boo Boo have been met with some tears, that’s for sure. But at least she is able to look on the bright side. As women, we can dwell on drama for far too long. Take this life lesson from Honey Boo Boo, and find a silver lining. When you get past the farting and burping, Honey Boo Boo has a bright, bubbly personality that we should all try to emulate. For example, when her niece was born with an extra finger, Honey Boo Boo has a positive:

So, when you are down on your luck, or poor body image is keeping you from looking in mirrors… you better redneckognize!
