Le’Asia Lundy: Director of Black History Month

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

For most students on our campus, February is the only thing that stands between them and spring break. However, for students in the Black Student Union, February is the beginning of Black History Month; a national celebration of African American history and culture.
Black History Month this year is under the leadership of Le’Asia Lundy. Lundy is an English major from Rivera Beach, Fla. She has been on the BHM committee for several years until finally becoming Executive Director.
“February is my favorite time of the year,” said Lundy. “It’s when all the fun really starts.”
The University of Florida is known for having the largest student-run celebration of Black History Month in the Southeast with a $52,000 budget. For the past 33 years our campus has been host to entertainers like Ne-Yo, J. Cole, Wale and John Legend, as well as interesting speakers like Rev. Run, Hill Harper, Boris Kodjoe and Tracee Ellis Ross.
As Executive Director, Lundy is in charge of supervising and planning the activities for the entire month of February.
“I’m in charge of making sure that the entire month runs smoothly and making sure this is the best possible celebration,” said Lundy.
With February just two weeks away, Lundy’s excitement continues to grow.
“I can not wait until this campus gets to see the amazing celebration that myself and entire my committee has planned,” she said. “Being able to see this month come alive will solidify that all the stress, months of late night meetings and hard work accurately displays the legacy of our history and culture.”
