How to Enjoy, Instead of Survive the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Peppermint mocha lattes are being served at Starbucks, you’ve been waiting all year for Free form’s (ABC Family) 25 days of Christmas and you have just accepted a Facebook invite to an ugly Christmas sweater party. Yup, the holiday season is in full swing. After eating all of the Thanksgiving leftovers your mom sent you home with, you’ve already moved on to perfecting your craft of baking gingerbread cookies. However, sometimes people can get lost during the holiday season. Over the years, the holiday season has become very materialistic. Expectations are high and gift giving creates a whole new kind of anxiety. Some people wish that they can “get through” the holiday season. Sometimes this thought goes through my head as well, which is normal. The holidays can be quite chaotic, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the season. I mean, it only comes around once a year, so why not take the time and really reflect on what makes this time of the year so special? Here are some reminders why the holiday season is actually the best time of the year.

1. Family

When comes down to what the holidays are really all about, it’s usually family. You shouldn’t be embarrassed or annoyed by your family because it’s all out of love. The holidays are when some of my fondest and funniest memories of my family were made. Take the time this holiday season and create some memories of your own to look back on.

2. Decorations

There’s nothing like hanging those twinkling lights on the roof of a house or putting the final touches on the Christmas tree. Decorating is a free and fun activity to do with friends or family. It’s nice to look back and reflect on classic traditional decorations while incorporating a modern twist with new decorations as well.

3. Food

Gingerbread cookies, holiday glazed ham and much more mouth-watering treats are for sure to tickle your taste buds this holiday season. Baking and cooking are truly a lost art form that can be rekindled during the month of December. Everything has cinnamon spices in it and bread in the name, so what more could you want than that combination?

The list could go on and on about why the holiday season is so special, but we haven’t got all day here. The important thing to remember is to be in the moment and take the time this holiday season to cherish all the great memories this season is going to give you.
