How to Decorate Your Apartment or Dorm for the Christmas Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

With Thanksgiving over and Christmas right around the corner, it’s about time for collegiettes across America to start getting into the holiday spirit. Before you head home for the holidays, you can spend time decorating your own college dorm or apartment. Decorating can be a fun girls’ night activity with your friends while you blare Christmas music and bake festive cookies.

Mini Christmas tree: Whether you decide to go for a live or faux Christmas tree, there are plenty to be found around Gainesville. You can go to garden stores or Walmart to purchase a live mini Christmas tree or even find some at the nearest Publix. One year I bought one at Publix and decorated it with little ornaments and with a little envelope on top with my boyfriend’s Christmas gift inside. The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating mini Christmas trees. You can easily get a few and pick a color theme to use on each one. Target even sells mini ornaments made for tiny trees that you can buy for an affordable price.

Red bows: Red bows are a great Christmas accent. They can spruce up even the most plain piece of apartment furniture. Tie them to your bedpost, put some on your kitchen chairs or even tie some around the lamps throughout your apartment or dorm. They will instantly turn plain items into festive pieces of furniture.

Advent calendar: Advent calendars are also a great addition to any well-decorated apartment. These calendars consist of tiny doors that open for each day of this month up to December 25. You can purchase them in different styles. Some are very lightweight and can hang on walls, while others are wooden and elegant and look great placed on a table. Have a chocolate craving? Buy a chocolate advent calendar where each day contains a piece of chocolate.

LED lights: LED lights are a great way to brighten up your apartment and get into a festive mood. You can buy them in a setting that will flash different colors at different times. You can even coordinate the lights to flash to the tunes of different Christmas songs if you’re feeling extra festive. You can purchase these lights in just about any store that sells Christmas decorations including Michael’s and Target.

Red and green accent pillows: If you want to take a more laid back and classy approach to Christmas, then simply buy some red and green pillows to accent your apartment with. Placing these on a leather couch and chairs will brighten up the entire room instantly!

So go on and start your Christmas decoration shopping. Decorating your apartment will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit before you head home for the break. Plus, having a real Chirstmas tree will make your living space smell amazing!
