While not always true, college major’ stereotypes often do have some truth to them and say a lot about its students. If you are struggling to find a last-minute Halloween costume, here are some great ideas you can follow that will fit the aesthetic of your field:

Engineering

It is no small feat to be a woman in STEM and even though being an engineer is hard, finding a costume doesn’t have to be. I have no doubt that you could make your own device to elevate your costume to the next level, but if you need some help picking something to be in the first place, I’ve got you. A classic would be dressing up as a robot. There’s a lot of room here to be funny or hot, or a little bit of both. You could also be an astronaut or construction worker. All of these tie in your passion for engineering while also leaving room to make the costume what you want it to be. If you work in a lab, you could also sneak your lab coat out and be “Rick and Morty,” someone from “Breaking Bad” or just an evil/mad scientist.

Pre-Med

While most of the time pre-med students give a stressed, sleep-deprived and wired-on-coffee type of vibe, they can definitely get dressed up and be fancy if the occasion calls for it. On one of the few nights a year they leave the library, pre-meds need to go all out for their costumes. There’s the obvious choice of a skeleton, easy and not hard to find on Amazon. If you want to spice it up a little, you could accidentally take home a pair of scrubs from your time shadowing in the hospital, or just buy a cheap pair from Amazon and just cover yourself with fake blood. To spice it up, you could also crop the scrubs or put holes in them. Make it seem like you’ve just made it through the zombie apocalypse or a really tough surgery. Prepare for your future while being creative and comfortable at the same time.

Political Science

Political science and any pre-law equivalents definitely give a Washington D.C., Georgetown, slay congresswoman aesthetic. Bordering on dark academia with a hint of lightness stemming from the white pillars of the White House, political science majors should stick to the classic, but powerful costumes that match this aesthetic. For example, if you want something funny, douse your hair in dry shampoo and find a tailcoat to channel your inner founding father. If you want to make it a little sexy, add knee high boots and some leather shorts. Another idea for all of the poli sci girls is dressing up as an iconic female political figure, but make it hot. Whether it’s Kamala Harris, Ruth Bater Ginsburg or Hillary Clinton, it would be easy to find a flattering black skirt with a cropped blazer and bralette. Add some pearls and maybe give your hair a little blowout and you are on your way to slaying your way through the government.

English

If you have ever read the “Secret History” by Donna Tart, you know exactly what aesthetic I’m thinking of for all the English majors. Definitely giving a dark academia and mysterious vibe. Even if you haven’t read the book, dressing up as a student studying classics in New Hampshire while covered in blood is the ultimate costume for English majors. The blood is enough of a Halloween touch, that it doesn’t even matter if someone hasn’t read the book. Find a plaid skort, a white button down and a matching tie with blood everywhere, like you just came back from some weird Greek ritual in the woods and things went awry. If this is not your vibe, you could dress up as one of the literary greats like Shakespeare, Dickinson, Hemingway, but make it sexy (basically use them as inspiration and then crop everything). If these still aren’t your vibe, pick a favorite book and a random character from there. You’re an English major so you shouldn’t have any problems pinpointing a good, memorable character.

Visual and Performing Arts

Another major that comes with a sense of mystery as their craft is often deeply misunderstood. However, unlike the English majors, those with a major that falls into the visual and performing arts have a much more free and colorful aesthetic. These students aren’t afraid to fully express themselves through clothes and especially through Halloween costumes. First, I am sure you know movies and the theater like the back of your hand. You could easily pick your favorite character and just crop the shirt a little to make it Halloween appropriate. If you want a little more guidance, ballerinas are all the rage this Halloween. You may even already have all the things you need to be on trend, so you get to save some money. You could also go the tortured artist route. You could be Van Gogh and add some spice by dripping blood from your ear and adding a bandage like in his famous portrait.

Business

Business majors work hard to play hard. They are some of the most fun people on campus and know their way around a business professional outfit. Don’t let this fool you though, business girls know how to put together a costume, something that is both serious and playful. The first recommendation that comes to mind for business majors is dressing up as an iconic entrepreneur. This could be someone like Jeff Bezos and you could make it funny by wearing a bald cap. You could also extend the definition of entrepreneur and dress up like a Kardashian in one of their iconic outfits. Another way to look at this could be to dress up as an influencer. Be funny and dress up like James Charles or Trisha Paytas. Either way, you can express your love for business while still having a relevant and funny costume.

Class of 2025 Bachelor of Health Science Student at UF I am a pre-med student who loves learning about science, but also enjoys being creative and connecting with others. I want to be a surgeon one day but currently enjoy learning about the human condition and I am exciting to write about it and share my perspectives. I am involved in the Undergraduate American Medical Womens Association, UF College Democrats, and Phi Delta Epsilon on campus. I also do research in pediatric cancer and volunteer with kids at Shands. Outside of school, I love traveling and want to live in Europe for a year after I graduate. I am also a big Harry Styles fan and enjoy movies/shows like Pride and Prejudice (2005), Gilmore Girls, Greys Anatomy, Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games, and the list goes on.
