A thrift store would probably be the last place a person would check to get clothing pieces. I am sure we can all agree that saving money and finding deals is always a top priority while going shopping, and as a college student I’m all about the bargains.

Although some people dislike thrift stores, I think they should be every collegiette’s first stop when going on a shopping trip, especially if you’re on a budget. Most are well organized stores that weed out the broken, filthy, and unusable things before putting stock on the sales floor. Lucky for us, Gainesville is a small and urban town with plenty of thrifting choices at our disposal. Before embarking on your next thrift store extravaganza, there are some things to keep in mind to ensure you’re making the most of your trip.

1. Be niceBe nice to employees working at local thrift stores because, as some of us collegiettes know, retail is a tough business. You may find that making good relationships with the workers may be in your best interest as they may be willing to set things aside for you while you run to the bank and make a transfer to your account for that cute pair of Steve Madden shoes.

2. Watch for bargain deals  Thrift stores are fairly cheap. Most items are priced at $20 or less throughout the store. Many stores run special deals often offering 50 percent and 75 percent off the regular sales price. Certain stores will sometimes offer daily and student discounts. Ask what’s on sale when you walk in.

3. Be patientWhen walking into a thrift store you might become overwhelmed by the large amount of options and sections to choose from, but always be patient and take your time to analyze and get familiar with the store. It’s easier to come prepared. Know exactly what you need and what items you’re looking to buy when you walk in. This can ease the overwhelmed feeling and instead make you feel more organized and make your shopping experience more enjoyable.

4. Know what’s worth the visitThrift stores tend to cluster together in areas with high traffic and low rent. Make a day of visiting all the shops in one area so you know for sure what your favorite and your least favorite stores are. You’ll be able to continue to shop on a budget with the best experience and in the best environment for you.

5. Be creativeKeep your eyes open for objects that might fill a need in an unusual and interesting way. Thrift stores have a variety of different sections, such as kitchenware, office supplies, equipment, books, electronics and furniture. These items can always add a creative spark to your dorm room or apartment. See an old Beatles record but don’t have a record player? Use is as wall decor instead!
