Gator Glam: 5 Ways To Wear Maroon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Now that cooler weather is almost upon us, it is officially time to break out the festive fall and winter colors. One shade in particular, maroon, stands out as a seasonal color that is very versatile and easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. It’s the shade of red that’s just dark enough to remind you of the cranberry sauce you’ll consume at Thanksgiving dinner, but also dark enough to distinguish itself from the bright red you see everywhere during Christmas time. Here are just some of the many ways to spruce up your closet with the introduction of this rich, luxurious color.

1. Rock it in a plaid flannel.
Maroon is a great hue to pair with other colors. For the fall and winter seasons, it is best to incorporate it in a plaid flannel with cooler hues and complement with similar colored undershirts (to keep you warm and looking cute!). To achieve a glam look, button your plaid flannel all the way up and add a glitzy statement necklace. A maroon plaid flannel like this one and a decadent collar neckpiece is sure to impress.

2. Glam it up with a handbag.
If you want to add more maroon into your wardrobe but don’t know where to start, owning an accessory like a handbag helps. Pair a basic, neutral-toned outfit with a gorgeous maroon bag (like this one) to add a pop of color to your day. Fringe is also a big trend this season, and if you wanted to combine the two together, here is a cute cross body purse to meet that desire.

3. Accessorize with a scarf.
Although it’s still pretty steamy in The Swamp, colder temperatures are right around the corner. What better way to incorporate a chic touch into your outfit than with a dark maroon scarf? Accessorized with a denim jacket and a flirty dress, it makes the perfect ensemble for a bonfire or a morning walk to class. For colder weather, you can opt for a chunky, knit maroon scarf, or if you just want to accentuate your look, you can wear an elegant neck scarf instead.

4. Play it cool in a light jacket.
If it’s not too cold yet or if you want an extra element of warmth for your outfit, a lightweight maroon jacket will do the trick. Simply pair your jacket with a pair of denim cutoffs and ankle-high boots to achieve a trendy, laid back look with minimal effort. If you want a warmer jacket for the colder weather, American Eagle Outfitters offers one in a soft, full zip up jacket as well as in a maroon soft cotton blend fleece for breezier, slightly warmer temperatures.

5. Get comfy with it in a sweater.
Have some fun on a picnic date and wear a maroon-colored sweater to make the mood more festive! Match a maroon sweater with a pair of white or black jeans for a casual vibe, or layer the sweater over a flowy dress for a completely new outfit. A maroon cropped pullover sweater is great way to complement gray high-waisted denim jeans, and a maroon V-neck tunic sweater looks awesome over a crisp white button down.

Maroon can be worn in a variety of fashion garments in order to get you hyped for the upcoming holiday season. Don’t let this short list fool you; maroon is great for dresses, pants and even shoes, too. And if you don’t already own an article of maroon clothing, use the examples above as inspiration on your next shopping spree!
