Picking out what to wear to class is a very important daily decision. The simple days of Kindergarten, when you could throw on a pair of jelly shoes and match it with some overalls and a Barbie lunchbox, are long gone. Picking out what to wear should be a fun process, just as it was then, but the clothes you wear in college should reflect your personality. What you wear to class says a lot about you. It can reveal which organizations you’re likely to join or the type of friends you are trying to meet. It can sometimes even reveal your major.
Stacey London from TLC’s hit show What Not To Wear once said, “Clothes allow you to see yourself in a different light. They can transform you instantly and have a very real, visceral impact. Clothes become symbolic of who we are.” To help you pick out the perfect outfit to wear on campus, I have come up with three helpful tips of what not to wear to class.
Tip #1: Save your UF18 shirt for the gym
There’s no easier way to spot a freshman than to look around for those royal blue class shirts and other Preview freebies, especially the signature orange lanyard and the UF tote. You want your outfit to speak for you, but the only thing this outfit does is scream you’re a freshman who needs help finding his or her next class.
Tip #2: Don’t overload on the orange and blue apparel
Because you chose to attend UF, you’re probably filled with school pride and don’t need to pile up on the orange and blue to prove it. Save your Gators apparel for the sporting events, and use your outfit to show something unique about yourself beside the fact that you’re proud to be a part of The Gator Nation. All the same: Don’t mix together garnet and gold. You might repel your classmates.
Tip #3: Keep it comfortable
Getting around campus can be difficult depending on where your classes are. If you have back-to-back classes on opposite sides of campus, you may not want to wear your new Kate Spade heels. Unless you can power walk in pumps, then all the power to you! You’ll also want to consider Florida’s bipolar weather. It’s important to be prepared for 100-degree weather and the occasional afternoon shower. Always remember you don’t have to choose between comfort and style. A true fashionista can manage to look just as fabulous in yoga pants as she can in a dress.
Your first year at college will be something you never forget. There will be times when you are stressed, but having the perfect outfit will help to reduce your anxiety and boost your confidence as you start your journey at the best university in the nation. Good luck this semester, Baby Gators!
