Football vs. No Football: UF and UNCW Relate

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

University of Florida

School spirit is completely redefined at the University of Florida. Athletics are ingrained into the culture of our school. Whether it’s football, basketball, baseball, or even gymnastics. UF is nationally known for being home to the Florida Gators. Football season completely takes over the fall semester. Students, families, and alum from all over flood the streets of Gainesville decked out in their best orange and blue attire. “Go Gators!” is a phrase you’ll probably hear at least once a day. To be honest, the majority probably can’t even fathom the idea of going to a school without a football team.

1. Three words: orange and blue.

Whether it’s game day or just a normal day on campus, students are always dressed up in our school colors. It’s definitely a popular color combo in our closets.

2. Gator game traditions are ingrained in all of us.

The Gator Chomp. Mr. Two Bits. We Are the Boys. Yelling Gator chants with about 90,000 other people in “The Swamp” is an experience like no other. If you are interested in hearing some of our chants, check them out here!

3. People from all over the country come back to Gainesville for home games.

The University of Florida campus is packed with people tailgating during Saturday home games. It’s a culture of people that all come together to root for their team. There is truly nothing like it.

4. Albert & Alberta are the best mascots and nobody could say otherwise.

I mean, how cute are they?!

5. Tim Tebow–need I say more?

Tim Tebow will forever be the pride of the University of Florida. If you’re lucky enough, you can even snap a quick selfie with him when SEC Nation comes into town!

6. Just because we love football, doesn’t mean we forget about our academics.

The University of Florida is currently ranked #14 in the U.S. News Top Public Universities.

Here at UNCW Her Campus, the word “sports” is not really a big deal. UNCW is known for the beach (which is 10 minutes away from campus) and being “laid back.” The students always seem relaxed and campus is more of a small town feel. We don’t have a football team and our basketball team is just recently starting to improve. The most school spirit we have is wearing teal (one of our school colors) on Tuesdays. For campuses who live and breathe football season, welcome to the other side of the spectrum.

1. Friends come to visit for the beach, not the tailgating.

2. When you say your school doesn’t have a football team and they think it’s a joke. It’s really not that big of a deal.

3. We’re not completely clueless when it comes to sports. We have everything except football.

4. School spirit is basically non-existent unless you’re at a hockey game.

5. Ironically, our club hockey team is a huge deal, and it’s awesome.
