Fashions That Stand the Test of Time: 5 Looks you can Always Count on

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Like many other things in life, fashion trends have come and gone over the years. Some fashion trends resurface years after they “died,” seemingly being given a second chance at life; some examples include flared jeans from the 60s, high waisted jean shorts from the 70s and flannel shirts from the 90s. All of these trends have reappeared in our lifetime, but may very well fade soon only to possibly reappear in the future.

However, some elements of fashion are timeless; they last through the vortex in which some trends are lost forever. The following five trends are some that are worth investing in, as they will stand the test of time and will always be in fashion.

1.     Stripes Galore

Whether they’re pinstripes on a business suit or horizontal stripes on a comfy sweatshirt, stripes are everywhere in fashion. I can almost guarantee that at any given time, if you walk into a store, you’ll see at least five striped items of clothing. Nautical style striped clothes are my personal favorite, but if you want a more classic look, go for simple black and white stripes!

2.     True Blue

There’s nothing more classic than a pair of blue denim jeans. There have been many trends with denim: light wash, dark wash, colored, distressed and patterned. True blue jeans, like Levi’s, have been there through it all. These jeans look best when paired with bright floral shirts to match the richness of the blue hue. Invest in jeans; they can be the sturdiest staple in your wardrobe. Pastel jeans were all the rage, but true blue jeans will always be in style.

3.     Plain White T’s

A simple white T-shirt paired with jeans is an easy way to achieve a naturally stylish look. A plain white shirt is so easy to find and fun to dress up. White is an empty canvas for adding tons of cute accessories like colorful floral scarves or statement-making necklaces. This is a definite must-have item in every girl’s wardrobe.

4.     Red Hot

Fashion doesn’t only pertain to clothing and shoes; cosmetics can, in a way, be seen as an accessory that can make or break an outfit. Simply adding red lipstick can take an outfit from “blah” to “fabulous” in just one stroke. Red lips are a bold choice that is sure to make you exude total confidence. Not to mention, red lips will immediately grab the attention of that cutie you’ve been eyeing from across the room. Red lips have been a go-to look for Hollywood starlets for years; it’s a look that never fails to make a statement.

5.     LBD

The No. 1 go-to item of clothing for any girl is an LBD, the “Little Black Dress.” Whether going out on a first date, attending a job interview, or just going to class, black dresses are quite possibly the most versatile piece of clothing ever. They can be dressed up with a pair of brightly colored heels and accessories or dressed down with strappy sandals and a comfy cardigan.

It’s fun to purchase some out there, fashion forward items for your closet, but sometimes it’s best to play it safe. Which of these timeless fashions will you invest in?
