Entertainment10: Super Bowl, Bobbi Kristina and Bruce Jenner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Entertainment10 is back for another week of entertainment news. This week was one of jaw-dropping proportions with stars making surprising confessions, social media hacks, and not to mention, one of the biggest nights in TV!

1. Super Bowl XLIX. The New England Patriots are the new Super Bowl champs after defeating the Seattle Seahawks 28 to 24.  With the 49th Super Bowl being both a hub for the world’s greatest athletes and A-list celebs, it comes as no surprise that while the action on the field was one of nail-biting proportions, this year’s game was one full of just as memorable moments off the field. Idina Menzel kicked off the night by singing the national anthem, followed by John Legend performing “America the Beautiful.” Additionally, celebs like Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West, Kevin Hart, Will Ferrell and Gisele Bundchen were all in attendance. The game also had performances by singer Katy Perry, who shined during her halftime show with guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot all joining her on stage. And you can’t mention the Super Bowl without mentioning the year’s hottest ads and the stars featured in them. Kardashian West, Adam Levine, Nick Cannon, Britney Spears, Jeff Bridges and many more were faces for companies like T-Mobile, Foot Locker and even SquareSpace.

2. Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown remains hospitalized and is still unresponsive after being found unconscious in a bathtub. The 21-year-old was found by her husband, Nick Gordon, and a friend in the couple’s home on Saturday morning. Her family remains at her side as she remains on a respirator with very little brain activity, as reported by People magazine. Brown’s father, Bobby Brown, released a statement regarding his child’s condition, saying, “Privacy is requested in this matter. Please allow for my family to deal with this matter and give my daughter the love and support she needs at this time.” Almost three years ago to the day, Kristina Brown’s mother, Whitney Houston, was found dead in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills Hotel room on Feb. 11, 2012 due to drowning caused by heart disease and cocaine use. No drugs were found following a preliminary investigation of Kristina Brown’s home, as reported by E! News, and authorities are still investigating the circumstances that led her to become unresponsive.

3. Bruce Jenner is on a “journey” to become a woman. After years of speculation, allegations and rumors, Bruce Jenner’s choice to transition to a woman has been confirmed. A source close to the 65-year-old shared with People that “[Bruce] is finally happy and his family is accepting of what he’s doing. He’s in such a great space. That’s why it’s the perfect time to do something like this.” Before news broke about the former Olympian’s transition, it was also confirmed that Jenner has been documenting his life and journey for a docu-series that TMZ reports will air on E!

4. Justin Bieber apologizes to fans and says he’s been covering up who he really is. The pop star, who has become known for his outlandish behavior, posted a video pouring his heart out, discussing his questionable choices over the past year and a half while promising to make a change. Also in the video, the Biebs admits to being afraid of what people are thinking of him right now, saying, “…I really want people to know how much I care, how much I care about people, and how I’m not that person to say, I don’t give a f*ck, you know? I’m not that kid. I’m a person who genuinely cares.” Bieber continued the video, saying, “And although what’s happened in the past has happened, I just want to make the best impression on people and be kind and loving and gentle and soft. And although people can call me a ‘softy,’ that’s how my mom raised me.” Bieber’s confessional came hours after the singer appeared on Ellen, where he also opened up to being nervous in front of crowds when he isn’t performing.

5. Kanye West debuts a new music video featuring his daughter, North West. West went on Ellen this week where he not only debuted the music video for “Only One,” but he also dished about married life, having more kids and his self-proclaimed “terrible twos,” which is the term he used to describe his “angry” behavior for the past few years. West wrapped up his appearance on the show premiering the video for the heartfelt song he released earlier in the year that is both a tribute to his daughter and late mother. In the music video, directed by Spike Jonze, West shows his vulnerable side singing to his daughter and embracing her while walking through the wilderness.

6. Taylor Swift’s Twitter and Instagram accounts were hacked. With Swift having the fourth largest Twitter account, the hack is the largest in Twitter history. The hacks directed Swift’s more than 51 million followers to follow another account, assumed to be involved in the hack and were quickly deleted according to The Verge. Swift still addressed the hacks on both Twitter and Tumblr, first writing on Tumblr, “Twitter is deleting the hacker tweets and locking my account until they can figure out how this happened and get me new passwords. Never a dull moment.” The hackers also claimed to have stolen nude photos of Swift, which she addressed in tweets, referencing her hit song, “Hackers gonna hack hack hack hack hack” and noting, “PS any hackers saying they have ‘nudes’? Psssh you’d love that wouldn’t you! Have fun photoshopping cause you got NOTHING.”

7.  Suge Knight arrested for murder. The founder of Death Row Records was charged with murder following a hit-and-run Thursday afternoon. Knight surrendered to authorities early Friday morning and was interviewed by police for three hours, according to the Los Angeles Times. This is not Knight’s first run-in with law, as the hip-hop legend’s career has been laced with arrests and legal issues. However, Knight’s lawyer, James Blatt, maintains his client’s innocence telling the Associated Press, “We are confident that once the investigation is completed, he will be totally exonerated. He was in the process of being physically assaulted by two men and in an effort to escape, he unfortunately hit two [other] individuals. He was in his car trying to escape.”

8. Disney introduces its first Latina princess. Disney’s first Hispanic princess will be Elena of Avalor, and she will make her debut in 2016 on the Disney Junior show, Sofia the First. In a statement from Disney, Elena is described as “a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairytale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” Princess Elena will get her own spin-off series in 2016 as well.

9. Iggy Azalea has yet another beef, and this time, it’s with famed designer Steve Madden. The Australian rapper took her frustrations out about a recent shoot she did with Steve Madden after coming across what she referred to as a “random” Tumblr page of her upcoming Steve Madden collection. “Everything in collaboration is supposed to be mutually approved. But Steve Madden did the most disgusting photo shoot ever and never even told me about it,” she tweeted but later deleted. “I’m just now seeing it as its uploaded on some random Tumblr page and I am livid,” she continued. Azalea also tweeted, “I’ve been bamboozled with a Tumblr page where everyone wears socks and takes unintentional crotch shots on pool toys. I’m in shock.” Following the outburst and public scrutiny, Azalea attempted to clear up her tweets by posting a lengthy caption on Instagram with a set of “approved” photos, writing, “What I had a ‘rant’ about on Twitter isn’t in regards to these pictures, it was about another, different set of images I wasn’t a part of creating that I felt weren’t reflective of my vision and direction for the collection.”

10. Let’s be honest, a week isn’t complete without celebrity baby news. Global superstar Shakira welcomed her second son with Gerard Pique in Barcelona this week. Also welcoming a new baby into the world was quarterback Eli Manning and his wife, Abby. Mrs. Manning gave birth to the couple’s third child hours after announcing her pregnancy. The welcoming of celeb babies didn’t stop there, as The Hunger Games’ Stanley Tucci and his wife, Felicity Blunt, had their first child together, a baby boy who they named Matteo Oliver. To round out the new Hollywood babies is The Avengers‘ Cobie Smulders and SNL actor Taran Killam, who announced their second child together this week while Smulders promoted Unexpected at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Finally, on Hollywood baby watch is actor Sam Worthington’s girlfriend, Lara Bingle, who has yet to confirm her pregnancy and debuted her baby bump for the first time this week.

I hope you enjoyed watching one of the biggest sporting events of the year (even if it was only for the commercials) as well as the rest of this week’s entertainment news. Thanks for reading, collegiettes. See you next week!
