Entertainment Ten: Britney Spears, Zac Efron, and Fall TV

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

This week we are discussing new music from Britney Spears, Zac Efron’s supposed stint in rehab, Ben Affleck as Batman, and so much more. This week is also chock-full of television news. The fall season is upon us, and that means season premieres, show news and casting announcements. An announcement has been made regarding the final season of  ‘Mad Men,’ and have y’all seen the new trailer for ‘American Horror Story: Coven’?

Hold on, because we’re jumping right in!

1. Britney Spears released a new single. The princess of pop announced that she would be dropping the lead single from her new album. The single was promptly “leaked” much to the delight of the Internet. In the song, Britney urges her fans to accomplish their dreams in a way that only Britney can. My real question is if that single did actually leak. Call me suspicious, but I can’t help but doubt it when artists act surprised about their music leaking early.

2. Zac Efron was in rehab? Is it true? Can it be so? According to E! News, the 25-year-old heartthrob was in rehab earlier this year and successfully completed his treatment. But for what? Early articles said Efron had an issue with alcohol, but new reports say he struggled with an addiction to cocaine, which came to a head while he was filming ‘Neighbors,’ in which he plays a frat boy. Whatever the reason, Efron deserves credit for going through rehab quietly and without fanfare. One can only imagine treatment is much more successful without a media circus (I’m looking at you, Lindsay Lohan).

3. Ben Affleck defends his position as the next Batman. Ah, the day the Internet broke down. Okay, one of the days. A lot of people had issues with Warner Bros. casting Ben Affleck as the next Batman. Personally, I like Ben Affleck, and I am curious to see his take on Batman, especially since this time the caped crusader will be featured in the next Superman movie. Affleck went on Jimmy Fallon’s show to discuss the backlash. Citing his Boston-bred thick skin, he said he was capable of handling what critics threw at him. The new Batman-Superman movie is set to be released in summer 2015.

4. Sky Ferreira and her boyfriend were arrested for drug possession. Celebrities and substance abuse, what else is new? The Daily Freeman reports that the 21-year-old singer/model was with her boyfriend Zachary Cole Smith in New York when the two were pulled over by police during a traffic stop. Police discovered the plates on the car were stolen and discovered ecstasy in Ferreira’s possession. Her boyfriend was in possession of heroin. Both were taken to jail and released on bail. Let me tell you, her mug shot is not pretty.

5. The trailer for American Horror Story: Coven was released.  The third season of the thrilling, spooky, creepy and popular horror series will start in October. In the meantime, fans got a taste of the upcoming story with the release of the one-minute trailer and a 30-second teaser. I am so excited to see the next installment in this highly addictive show.

6. ‘Tis the season for fall premieres. There’s nothing quite like that time of year when shows have their fall premieres. This time is a glorious time for everyone who loves television as much as I do. From established shows like New Girl and The Big Bang Theory to new shows like Blacklist with James Spader and Super Fun Night with Rebel Wilson. No worries, you’ll be hearing about everything great in this list in the coming weeks.

7. The final season of Mad Men will be split up. Yes, I know. You’re all sad that one of the sexiest shows on television is going bye-bye. But, y’all still have two years left of Don Draper. The final season is going to be chopped in half. The first seven episodes will air in 2014 and the remaining seven in 2015. Other shows are following suit such as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.

8. Poltergeist is being remade. Because the world needs yet another remake. This 1982 classic horror movie is in the works to be remade with actor Sam Rockwell starring opposite Rosemarie DeWitt. Rockwell has stated that this remake will not be a continuation of the original characters. Rockwell has garnered fame from his work in The Way Way Back and Frost/Nixon.

9. Jamie Lee Curtis could be the star of a new horror show. According to Deadline, Curtis is going to be in a series for ABC Family called ‘The Final Girls.’ Curtis is a mysterious woman who brings together a group of girls who all have a personal horror story to tell. Curtis’ character is meant to channel all of the negative energy and push the girls toward a greater good… whatever that means. Curtis did star in the original Halloween, and has since become a well-known star. Really though, she will always be the mom from the Freaky Friday remake to me.

10. Kanye West was charged after his encounter with paparazzi. Back in July, Kanye West got into a scuffle with paparazzi at Los Angeles International Airport. If you watch the TMZ video, you’ll see West stop to argue with several photographers as West was leaving the airport. West grabs one of them and forces him to the ground. The photographer filed a lawsuit in August claiming West attacked him without reason and injured his hip. West has been charged with misdemeanor battery and attempted grand theft. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 10. Most likely, nothing will come of this. Celebrities get in trouble all the time with this kind of thing, which seems kind of unfair considering most of the time they’re provoked. However, West has been in trouble for something like this in the past. Back in 2008, he and his road manager were arrested after they smashed paparazzi cameras at the airport. West had to go to anger management classes and perform community service. It’s likely that he will receive the same punishment.
