Dishes ‘n’ DIYs: Using Coffee Grounds For Better Skin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Healthy, beautiful skin has always been a trend. Many products on the market promise to give you better skin, which makes it difficult for us collegiettes to decide which ones to pick. But what if the secret to better skin could be found in our groceries? Could simple, everyday ingredients really help us achieve healthier, more beautiful skin?

Apparently they can! Coffee grounds provide numerous benefits when used on the skin. They can reduce cellulite, improve skin tone and exfoliate, according to blogger Ali on GimmeSomeOven.com. When mixed with sugar and oil, coffee grounds work wonders on the skin. Let’s get started on this skin-smoothing remedy!

Step 1: Gather ingredients

1. Coffee grounds: Use whatever coffee grounds you have available.  2. Sugar: Use whatever sugar you have available.3. Oil: I prefer to use olive oil, as it is great for the exfoliation of the skin.

Step 2: Mix ingredientsThere are no specific proportions you need to follow. I prefer to pour the coffee grounds that I have available into a bowl, and then add enough sugar for about a fourth of the amount of coffee grounds I have. I then add just a splash of olive oil to the mix. You do not want to add too much olive oil or else it will drown the dry ingredients. Add just enough so that your mixture is damp. For me, the mixture should have the feel and appearance of wet sand once it is thoroughly mixed.

Step 3: Rub on skinGently rub the mixture on the surface of your skin. You can use this mixture on your entire body, or just certain parts; it is entirely up to you. Leave the mixture on for a few minutes, and then thoroughly rinse it off with water.

This is a simple recipe, and it’s convenient and inexpensive. No more going on scavenger hunts trying to find the best skin products at the store. No more mixing hundreds of ingredients together to create the most effective paste. No more spending a fortune on spa treatments. Just grab your coffee grounds, your sugar and your oil, mix it up and you’re good to go!
