The Dish: Quick-and-Easy Baked Mozzarella Sticks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Do you have at least one food that if you see it, you just can’t say no? For me, it’s anything with cheese. The funny thing is that I’m lactose intolerant, but I just can’t stay away from it! This week, I came across a simple, quick way to make mozzarella sticks. Mozzarella cheese is low in lactose, making it a friendly snack for you lactose-intolerant collegiettes™! This snack is also perfect for any occasion, especially if you’re in need of a good snack when you have people over!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 bag of string cheese
  • 2 cups of Italian breadcrumbs
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of milk
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Marinara sauce

Here’s how to make them:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F.
  2. In one bowl, pour two cups of Italian breadcrumbs. In another bowl, mix together the eggs and milk with a fork. Pour the flour into a third bowl.
  3. Take the string cheese sticks, and cut them in half. Dip each stick in the flour, completely covering it. Move on to the eggs and milk, completely coating the cheese sticks.
  4. Then dip each cheese stick in the bowl of breadcrumbs, again completely coating it.
  5. This step is optional: place the cheese sticks in a container, and freeze them for 30 minutes. Some people like to do this to keep the mozzarella sticks intact after baking, but as long as you don’t mind getting a little messy, it’s not necessary.
  6. Time to bake your mozzarella sticks! Melt the butter, and let it drizzle over the mozzarella sticks. Place them on a baking sheet. (Make sure to use cooking spray!)
  7. If you froze the sticks beforehand, place them in the oven for eight to 10 minutes. If you didn’t freeze them, just leave them in there for five minutes.
  8. When time is up, take your crispy snacks out of the oven, and let them cool a bit. Then, proceed to dip them in marinara sauce and eat up!

That’s all there is to it, collegiettes™! By baking your mozzarella sticks instead of frying them, you have a healthy alternative to a delicious snack. Enjoy!
