My craft for this week is not for the faint of heart, so get ready. This one needs a whole lot of patience, but the final product is so worth it in the end. If you’ve ever seen a cute button collage at a craft fair and didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a piece you could easily make yourself, this one’s for you!

Supplies:

First, you are going to decide what shape you want the button collage to make. I made a fleur-de-lis because it is one of my sorority’s symbols, and I gave it to my little as a present. Other fun ideas include a heart, cross, infinity sign, or even a gator (if you’re really going for it!). Once you choose a shape, you need to draw out the shape on your background piece of paper with a pencil.

You can pick a color scheme or different shades of the same color for the buttons. I would suggest red or pink for a heart, but I chose blue for my design. It’s also helpful to have many different sized buttons and a lot of smaller ones, so they can fill in the gaps.

Lay the buttons over the shape within the lines you drew starting with the bigger buttons. Then, use the smaller buttons to add depth and make sure there is no empty space. Hot glue each button one-by-one to the background.

Also, I chose to use more decorative buttons to distinguish one of the sections of the fleur-de-lis at the bottom. This added definition to my shape, so if you want to do a gator, you could use green buttons for the body as well as add a pink bow or blue eye. Be careful not to burn yourself, since the hot glue can seep through the holes in the buttons. Let all the hot glue dry, and make sure the buttons are secured tightly. Finally, place the background paper in a shadow box to display your artwork!

Happy Crafting!
