When Carly Bruening came to UF, she rushed – literally.

She strode up and down Sorority Row, spoke with girls from different houses and sat through dinners and conversations. But when she and Alpha Chi Omega chose each other, she found her “home-away-from-home.”

The 21-year-old telecommunications junior now serves as her sorority chapter’s website coordinator and its Her Campus representative.

In the past, she worked as its marketing and public relations vice president, managing the social media profiles for her chapter as well as its new alumni blog.

Bruening found happiness and confidence in her sorority.

“Becoming a member of any organization on campus is a commitment,” Bruening said. “Joining a Greek organization is an even greater commitment. In the long run, it’s been the best choice I’ve made since my decision to attend UF.”

Bruening spends 40 hours a week on her chapter responsibilities and her part-time job at Study Edge. Her friends describe her as passionate and creative.

“When I want something I go for it,” Bruening said. “I keep my friends and family close as they inspire me to be the best person I can.”

Bruening said involvement is important throughout college and that younger students should consider going Greek.

“It will transition you into the woman you want to be and helps you achieve your goals,” Bruening said. “Not only that, but you meet everyone. Go to dinner dates and parties with that one friend you aren’t close with. You never know. You could end up being best friends.”
