9 Perks of Being in a Relationship in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Dating in college has never been easy. In a world where hook-ups and disposable feelings are the social norm, committed relationships are more than rare. Some people think being in a relationship in college makes no sense at all because they think you’re wasting your youth. However, I couldn’t disagree more. Below is a list of perks of having a significant other that breaks the mold of the single mentality.

1. You can still have the fun experiences your single friends have like going out with the girls or studying abroad, but you also have the benefits of a stable relationship. It’s the best of both worlds.

2. You have someone who knows and loves you during a time when you’re discovering yourself and growing.

3. You will never have to waste energy worrying about that random guy texting you back.

4. From a relatively early age, you learn about what’s important to your significant other and what is needed to have a successful relationship. Regardless if this relationship works out, you’ve still gained valuable experience with dating.

5. You can listen to your friends complain about all the immature guys they met at the bar that night or the creeps on Tinder and be happy you no longer have to deal with that scene. When your single friends complain about not being able to find a nice guy, you feel especially lucky to have someone so wonderful.

6. Boring and mundane activities like grocery shopping, studying at the library or heating up leftovers are 100 times better with a partner by your side.

7. The connection is better, the laughter is deeper, and the affection is stronger in a relationship when compared to a casual fling.

8. Even when you’re wearing sweatpants and no makeup, you have someone to make you feel beautiful.

9. At the end of the day, good or bad, there will always be someone waiting for you. There’s no greater feeling than that.

A relationship in college isn’t as bad as one might think. For those of you who want to be single in college because that makes you happiest, then by all means, go for it. But the perks of a steady relationship cannot be ignored. Don’t be afraid to be young, independent and committed.
