Luscious. Silky. Long. Voluminous. Smooth. Healthy.

All of these words describe what every girl wishes their hair could be; however, most, if not all, of these are hard to achieve — especially with our bipolar and humid Florida weather. Emphasis should mostly be placed on the last word, healthy, because your hair can’t be silky-smooth if it isn’t healthy. Here are some tips I’ve gathered from various hair stylists throughout the years that are sure to give you a healthier head of hair:

1. Bottoms up!
Many girls tend to brush their hair starting at the roots and yanking through the knots until they reach the ends. This should be avoided at all costs because it causes serious breakage. Those short flyaways on top of your head? Yeah, that’s probably where they came from. Instead, brush out the lower third of your hair first (preferably with a wide-tooth comb), and work your way up to the roots in order to reduce the amount of damage.

2. Don’t listen to the ads
Hair advertisements and commercials featuring celebrities make you think, “Well, if Eva Mendes uses Pantene then it must be good, right?” Wrong! No matter how sleek her hair may look, I can guarantee you that it’s not because she uses Pantene. This product contains wax that gives your hair the illusion of silkiness; meanwhile, it’s actually stripping your hair of necessary nutrients. Read the ingredients before purchasing hair products, and spend a little more on a nicer shampoo if you need to. Your hair is worth it!

3. Give your scalp some lovin’
Girls tend to concentrate on the tips of their hair and whether or not they have split ends; therefore, they have a tendency to ignore their scalp. Your scalp is the source of your hair and consequently deserves the most attention. It needs to be in good condition so your hair can grow healthy from the start. Use a nutrient-filled shampoo like Clear Scalp & Hair Therapy, and make sure you massage it deep into the roots for it to work. Rinsing completely, and your hair will be healthier within just a few washes.

4. Snip, snip, snip!
The solution to dead, split ends is simple: get a haircut! Don’t buy into all of those split end remedy products. If you’re like me and have long hair that you’re attached to, a cut can be as miniscule as a one-inch trim. Occasional haircuts are essential for healthy hair to grow. If it gets too long and the ends get too old, then your hair will become unmanageable. Don’t be afraid to snip a bit away; it’ll grow back before you know it!

Next time you’re at the store, think twice before you pick the cheap, waxy shampoo. Your hair deserves some attention, and with these tips, you’ll be on the road to healthier hair in no time!
