10 Things You Weren’t Expecting When You Decided to Quarantine with Your Boyfriend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

I love my boyfriend. We met our first week in college, and I had told myself that I wouldn’t settle down for anyone less than perfect my freshman year.

I had dedicated myself to the idea of a year of freedom and frat parties – that inevitably only lasted until September when I started dating my boyfriend.

He was so romantic and full of aspirations. He really seemed to have his life together.

Quarantine was something entirely different.

His habits were gross.

He never got out of his pajamas. He only ate takeout pizza and refused to do his dishes when he was done – oh wait, those were all me.

I felt disgusting in comparison to my orderly and neat boyfriend, and there were so many other things I had to get used to.

1. You can’t get all the attention

I was so used to having his undivided attention when we were together.

It may feel like spring break part two, but unfortunately, classes are still in session, and that means you and your boyfriend still have to study.

2. Learn to cope with snoring

This is definitely the hardest pill to swallow.

You love your guy.

Obviously, you want to think he’s perfect, but then it’s 2 a.m. and his nose is suddenly a fully functioning orchestra.

You’ve got to learn to fall asleep first, especially if you snore, too.

This could easily escalate to a sleep-off.

Whoever can fall asleep first, wins. You’ve got to be prepared.

3. Cuddling at bedtime is very restraining

Cuddling is an integral part of a relationship.

You feel so secure and loved.

At night, however, when you’re far from tired and he’s nodding off, it is the most confining experience.

You can’t read without waking him up.

You have to just suffer with your right arm losing circulation and your phone battery dying.

4. Your partner has an annoying laugh

When you first started dating, you thought his laugh was the most beautiful noise.

After two weeks straight of constant interaction, you’re starting to feel differently.

He’s still cute, though, just wished that he would stop laughing so loudly.

5. You really don’t have that many common interests

When your relationship is built around trying new Thai restaurants and hiking, sometimes, you can’t find anything to talk about when you’re alone.

This leads us to our next point.

6. Scrolling through social media next to each other can be quality time

During the coronavirus pandemic, nothing says I love you like sharing memes.

Show your love by texting your boyfriend (who is right next to you) a heartwarming TikTok of a dad and his dog.

7. Your boyfriend might have the more high-maintenance shower routine

Life is full of surprises.

Some of those surprises are that your boyfriend’s skincare routine is a five-step process and yours revolves around one orange bottle of Neutrogena cleanser.

Also, he sings in the shower?

8. Tiger King is the best way to bond

Carole Baskin definitely killed her husband, and you can learn all about that in the Tiger King documentary.

It will make you scratch your head like nothing else and is a great way to kill seven hours.

9. There no better date than splitting a can of Chef Boyardee

With interaction with the outside world limited, date nights become a little less romantic.

It’s so important to still have fun and take time to reacquaint romantically with your significant other.

10. If he likes you in your three-day-old bun and old cross-country T-shirts, he’s the one

When the only people you see all day are on Zoom, it’s easy to let your hygiene go a little bit.

If he still cherishes you in this state, he truly has a heart of gold.
