10 Small Things You Can Do to be More Productive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

I’ll be the first to admit that my life is a total disaster. I’m one of those people who constantly feels like I have a million things to do but can never actually get anything done. My life alternates between a constant state of trying to get everything accomplished all at once or talking myself into taking a break from all my work and spending my day doing absolutely nothing. As a college girl, I’m sure I’m not alone in sharing these feelings. It seems like between our classes, extracurricular activities and part-time jobs, if we don’t feel as though we’re constantly doing something, it’s almost like we’re not being productive at all. Give yourself a break collegiettes, and read on for 10 small things you can do every day to make you feel more productive — without totally stressing you out.

1. Wake up earlier
Waking up earlier is an easy way to be more productive. This doesn’t necessarily mean you need to wake up at the crack of dawn, but if your usual wake up time is noon, trying waking up a couple of hours earlier. You’ll be surprised at all you’ll accomplish!

2. Make your bed
Making your bed after you’re ready to start the day might not seem like it would help you become more productive, but it actually will. Once you’ve completed this small task, your room look will look tidy and you’ll feel ready to tackle other things on your to-do list (see below!).

3. Make a to-do list
Make a daily to-do list of all of the tasks, big or small, you’d like to take on during the day. Keeping the list down to five items will not only allow you to get plenty of things done, but it will also keep you organized and stress-free.

4. Fit in a workout
Half an hour of your day is all the time you need to set aside to become more productive by working out. Whether it’s a run or a quick yoga session, fitting in a workout will not only make you feel more productive, but it will also make you feel happier and more energized throughout the day.

5. Organize something
Organize something — literally anything. This activity should take, at the most, 30 minutes of your day. Fold that pile of clean clothes you’ve been meaning to get to or put away the dishes in the dishwasher. Your place will be much cleaner, and it’s a great use of your time.

6. Look at your phone less
This is definitely the toughest one to do on this list, but looking at your phone less during the day can open up hours of your time you didn’t know you had. Every time you try to look at your phone to do something nonessential, try tackling something from your to-do list.

7. Take a break
This one is a definite must to have a more productive day. Spend up to an hour taking a break by catching up on your favorite show or taking a power nap. Your brain will thrive off the needed rest and you be even more revitalized to continue your day.

8. Do the thing you’ve been procrastinating on
By this, I mean you should try to cross off that one small thing you hate doing but needs to be done. For some this might mean taking out the trash or washing a load of laundry. I know you hate it, but once it’s done you’ll feel incredibly accomplished.

9. Drink more water
This is a total no-brainer, but the more water you drink, the more hydrated you’ll be and the more energy you’ll have throughout the day. People have also said that the more water you drink the more your skin will glow like Beyoncé, so that’s a total plus.

10. Catch up with your family and friends
Making time in your daily schedule to catch up with either your parents or a close friend is a great use of your time. You’ll feel better knowing you’re making this relationship a priority, and it’s another thing you can cross off of your to-do list.

Hey, we should at least fake it ‘til we make it, right?
