10 Iconic Songs That Will Turn 10 This Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

It’s hard to believe how quickly songs age. Since a lot of them get played through the years, it’s easy to forget how old they really are, especially when a “throwback” can literally mean two months ago. Here are 10 songs that came out in 2007.

1. Irreplaceable – Beyonce

Before Queen Bey said “Boy, bye!” she put everything he owned in a box to the left. This girl power anthem was on top of the Billboard charts for 10 weeks and is still played at every girl’s night out. We may know more about Yonce now than we used to, but you must not have known that this song turns 10 this year. In a decade, her crown never slipped. Beyonce will always be goals.

Most iconic lyric: “To the left, to the left”

2. Umbrella – Rihanna

An unknown fact about this song is that it was originally meant for Britney Spears. But once Jay-Z heard it, he realized it was meant for the Barbadian beauty; and good thing he did! This song put Rihanna on the map, and she has continued to be better and better every single year since.

Most iconic lyric: “You can stand under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh, eh”

3. Hey There Delilah – Plain White T’s

It’s kind of sad that the decade between then and now sweet guys who would literally do anything for a girl have all but vanished. This song has definitely been meme’d to death, but the sentiments will always make us say “awwww.” Hey There Delilah is a song that nobody really thinks about… until it comes on and then everyone gets #turnt.

Most iconic lyric: “Hey there Delilah, what’s it like in New York City”

4. Girlfriend – Avril Lavigne

However, sweet guys were not the only thing that were phased out in the 2010s. The punk princess IDGAF attitude embodied by Avril Lavigne unfortunately did, too. Avril Lavigne literally did not care about anything, including this guy’s new girlfriend and her feelings. It’s refreshing to see that attitude and I honestly hope it revitalizes in 2027.

Most iconic lyric: “She’s like, so whatever, you could do so much better!”

5. Beautiful Girls – Sean Kingston

Oh, beautiful girls. An anthem dedicated to girls who are out of your league. This is ironically a girl power anthem, which is always great. You almost feel bad for poor Sean. But, the girl gave him a chance! Why couldn’t it be back to ’99 watching movies all the time? Considering this song still gets traction, it’s crazy to believe how old it is.

Most iconic lyric: “They’ll have you suicidal when they say it’s over”

6. Rehab – Amy Winehouse

The saddest song on this list. Amy Winehouse died in 2011, only a few years after this smash album came out. It was definitely because she didn’t go to rehab which makes it sadder. However, this Grammy-winning song will always be a classic. RIP Amy

Most iconic lyric: “I ain’t got the time, and if my daddy says I’m fine”

7. Teardrops on My Guitar – Taylor Swift

Before there was Harry Styles or Calvin Harris, there was Drew. This was T. Swift’s first (but definitely not last) sad song. In 10 years, Taylor Swift has converted me from a fan to a detractor, basically because she annoys me. But that image of her holding the guitar on her bed with glittery eyeshadow will remain iconic… forever.

Most iconic lyric: “I’ll put his picture down and maybe get some sleep toniiiiiight”

8. Kiss Kiss – Chris Brown ft. T-Pain

Before Chris Brown went a little crazy, he was on top of the world. He was 18 when this amazing song came out, making people of all ages realize that he was a force to be reckoned with. Everything about this song is amazing. Every word, every beat; everything. Please bring this Chris back… we miss you.

Most iconic lyric: “In her mind, she fantasize bout GETTING WITH MEEEE”

9. Fergalicious- Fergie

After Fergie left the Black Eyed Peas, she arguably came out with the best solo album, The Duchess – and The Duchess she was. Almost every song on this album is a classic hit and I easily could have filled this list with Fergie songs, but the most iconic is Fergalicious. Whether they were calling her Stacy or getting their pleasures from her photos, Fergie single-handedly put men in their place. 10 years later, she’s married to hot “actor” Josh Duhamel. Fergalicious def.

Most iconic lyric: “Fergalicious, definition, make them boys go loco”

10. Crank Dat- Soulja Boy

This song incited a slew of dance songs that are still in place today a la Juju on that Beat. Everyone was crankin’ dat everywhere. If this song is played at a party, everyone will get up and do the entire dance and scream all of the words. It’s literally up there with the Cha-Cha Slide. It’s a shame that 17-year-old Soulja was way more mature than the ex-convict, Chris Brown fighting, almost-30-year-old that takes his place today.

Most iconic lyric: “YOUUUUUU”

So next time you’re making a sweet playlist, toss in one of these great throwback songs. It’s only fair since they’re turning ten.
