5 Online Activities to Broaden Your Horizons at Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCT chapter.

Instagram is full of friends living their best lockdown lives. In some ways, lockdown has forced people to pursue their interests or even to discover new ones – many of which rely on an internet connection. Here are some online events made specially to entertain you during this unusual period.

Harry Potter Fan? Together in Quarantine Course

It may be over twenty years since ‘The Boy Who Lived’ first made his entrance, but this course manages to uncover new perspectives on the iconic series. It’s a project of the ‘Harry Potter and the Sacred Text’ podcast which uses religious practices to better understand the books. The course is open to everyone (one of the hosts actually identifies as an atheist) and challenges you to implement change in your own life, based on lessons from the books.

Although this eight-week course is already underway, it’s not too late to take part (you can also just join one class). Scholarships are available.

Book Worm? Cheeky Natives Instagram Lockdown Takeover

The producers of the acclaimed ‘Black Literature’ podcast have found a new way to keep SA’s book lovers busy. You can now fill your evenings with a series of Instagram takeovers by local authors. These hour-long sessions include a reading and Q&A time with the author.

Phumlani Pikoli and Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng have already been featured. We can’t wait to see who’s next! Make sure to follow @cheekynatives so you don’t miss out.

Fitness Fanatic? Live Yoga

Online yoga classes are nothing new, but give a thought to local businesses and support those that have moved online. Wild Thing is one such studio that offers live classes via Zoom. The female-run Cape Town studio has various Vinyasa-based classes every day both morning and evening.

If that’s not for you, you can also get unlimited access to their collection of pre-recorded classes for R200 per month. It’s time to show this virus that revenge body…

Politician-to-be? EFF Book Club

There may not be any rallies going on, but the EFF continues to spark debate with its 21-day lockdown offering. The book club covers several texts that are central to the EFF’s philosophy. While the club aims to broaden understanding of the EFF’s policies, it remains open to all. The recommended readings include Fanon’s Wretched of the Earth and Das Kapital.

The book club is already underway, but there are still a few more texts to go. The EFF makes the texts available on its digital platforms and there are lectures and Q&A sessions with senior leaders on social media.

Pet lover? Physio-style Massage Session

Around the world, pets are making the most of lockdown. Your furry friend may already be on cloud nine with you at home 24/7, but why not kick things up a notch with an online workshop with Animal Physical Rehab? It’s especially ideal for older dogs with arthritis or animals recovering from surgery.

The consultations offer physiotherapy-style massage techniques and strengthening exercises that you can do yourself.

Not only do these activities allow you to reconnect with the outside world, but they also develop your interests. With this win-win, you couldn’t find a better reason to be online.
