Valentines Day: No Date, No Problem!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.
The classic insecurity for many collegiettes: what if I’m dateless for Valentine’s Day? Like many of you, I am also a young woman in this “predicament”, which I say should be embraced as an opportunity to celebrate with the best dates, your friends. Friends love you just as much or more than your average Valentine would, so shake off the single blues and create a night to remember. My girlfriends and I have been pondering what we want to do to celebrate this traditional day of love and romance, and here are a few ideas we’ve come up with!

1. Movie Night – Whether it be staying in for a chick flick extravaganza or heading to the nearest big screen, movies are always a great chance to hang out with your best friends.
  • Pros of staying in – binge eating your favorite foods, I’m thinking some popcorn, pizza, and Ben and Jerry’s, and not worrying about dressing to impress.
  • Pros of the theaters – two great new choices are in theaters Valentine’s Day weekend. First off is The Last Five Years, a musical film following the relationship of Jamie and Cathy from start to finish and featuring the amazingly talented Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. Next, for an evening sure to fit the Valentine’s Day mood, the wildly successful book adaption Fifty Shades of Grey is also premiering at theaters near you, starring the handsome Jamie Dornan and beautiful Dakota Johnson. Not in the mood for cliché love and romance? Just pick your group favorite, or if you are feeling a bit rebellious, horror movies are a fun way to break the Valentine’s Day status quo.

2. Retail Therapy! – Shopping is a cure for anything, but can be an especially fun way for young women to keep their mind off any hurt feelings they have or purely embrace their singleness in style.

3. Dessert, and Lots of It! – Who needs a box of chocolate when so many great options exist out there! Have a baking party with all your favorite Pinterest recipes, build your own chocolate fondue with all you and your friend’s favorites, or dig in the freezer for your favorite cartons of deliciousness. Plus, plenty of awesome options like Sprinkles Cupcakes just minutes from campus, Extraordinary Desserts by Balboa Park, and Baked Bear in Pacific Beach are available for a fun, local dessert outing in San Diego.

4. Karaoke Party! – Nothing like singing the blues away right? Gather your favorite people for a night of rambunctious fun full of laughter, dancing, and undoubtedly interesting renditions of your favorite tunes.
