Meet Paloma Young, Costume Designer and Tony Award Winner

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

This week’s Campus Celebrity is going to fall in step with last week’s feature and will focus on a notable alumni who has found great success after UCSD. What could be more encouraging, current collegiettes?

Now, I’m not sure about you, but one of my absolutely favorite categories when it comes to award shows, be they the Golden Globes, the Academy Awards, or the Tony Awards, would undoubtedly be costume design. The power of costume in film, television, and theater is both underestimated and absolutely magical. The right costume translates ideas and emotions and can be used to transport an audience to a different time or place. As a lover of both fashion and entertainment, costume design for me represents an absolute summit of beauty and creativity.

That’s why I’d love to spotlight Paloma Young (pictured right), a successful costume designer who graduated from UCSD in 2006. She left our campus with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Costume Design. Since graduating, Paloma has been met with great success in her field, designing for such productions as the South Coast Repertory’s Charlotte’s Web, The Old Globe’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and UC San Diego’s very own production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Perhaps the pinnacle of Young’s success so far came in 2012, when she took home the Tony Away for Best Costume Design for the looks she designed for a show entitled Peter and the Starcatcher. A short time browsing Young’s website proved her work to be absolutely enchanting.

Also, her work for the aforementioned Peter and the Dreamcatcher, a show that sheds light on the story of Peter Pan, was stunning. I thought I’d let her work speak for itself, and act as an inspiration for those currently pursuing creative degrees at UCSD. Enjoy, collegiettes!
