We are switching up our Campus Celebrity feature a bit this week, and we hope you’ll enjoy. Rather than featuring a student who currently attends or a professor who currently teaches at UCSD, we are going to share with you a little bit about the late James Avery, successful actor, poet, television writer, and Triton alumni.
Most will recognize James Avery chiefly from his role as Uncle Phil from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but Avery has appeared in a number of films and television series such as Grey’s Anatomy and The Prince of Egypt. A true Renaissance man, he boasted prominence in the worlds of poetry and theater, as well. As it happens, Avery studied theater on our very own campus, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Drama and Literature and graduating in 1976. His impressive career ensures Tritons in and out of the Theater Department that a bright future lies ahead.
UCSD honors James Avery with a performance tribute on March 1st, 2014 from 2-4 pm. Come to the Mandell Weiss Forum for an afternoon spent in celebration of Avery’s talents.
