5 Last-Minute DIY Mother’s Day Gifts She’ll Love!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

Hey collegiette! With Mother’s Day right around the corner, we thought we’d share a few ideas for cute and easy DIY gifts to show Mom just how much you really care and appreciate her. Let’s get started!

Mason Jar Frame & Vase

Let’s admit it, we all love those mason jars. What better way to surprise Mom than with a colorful makeshift vase with a picture of the two of you in the middle, complete with a nice bouquet of flowers? All you need is a mason jar, paint, paintbrushes, painter’s tape, a vinyl sticker, clear spray paint, a foam cup, and a picture. Just position the painter’s tape around the area you are going to place the picture and then paint the rest of the jar. Cut your picture to the appropriate size, and place it inside the jar with the painter’s tape holding it in place. Seal the outside with a coat of clear spray paint. To hold the flowers in place, put a foam cup inside the jar and add the flowers.

Mani/Pedi Gift basket

Forget about all those store made gift baskets, make your own that’s personalized for your mother! Grab a few of her favorite nail colors, cotton balls, a nail file, nail clippers, nail polish remover, a callus stone, and a pretty bouquet of flowers for a pop of color. Tie a ribbon around the basket and make a bow to put a smile on her face.

Chalkboard Bottomed Wine Glasses

Buy a couple of wine glasses from your local Ross, TJ Maxx, or Pier 1 Imports, and pick up some chalkboard paint from your local craft store. Dip the bottom of the wine glasses in the paint, and let it dry. Grab some chalk and personalize Mom’s new, creative glasses for her next Wine Night with friends!

Photo Collage on a Wooden Letter

First, print out a dozen black and white photos of you, your family, or anything sentimental to Mom. Get a large wooden letter initial for her first name or ‘M’ for Mom. Paint the outside edges of it with a bright, eye-catching color and let it dry. When it’s dried, cut the photos accordingly to fit on the front of the letter, adhering them with a small layer of Mod Podge. Ta da!

Spring Inspired Tea Light Holder

To do this, you need a jam jar, tea lights, spring-colored tissue paper, white glue, and water. Tear the paper into squares and mix a solution of glue and water to make your paste. Paint the paste on the outside of the jar and place the tissue paper as you wish. Try not to layer too thickly so the light can still shine through. Cover the paper in a light layer of the paste to seal it and make waterproof. Allow it to dry before putting the tea light inside. Light the candle and see the pretty colors come to life!

However, if you don’t want to spend any money on a gift, just heading home and surprising Mom will be just as special. To really make her day, help out around the house, draw her a bath, buy her some groceries, or cook dinner. Finish the day off with some girl talk or a viewing of her favorite movie.

We hope these ideas were helpful to you, collegiette! To all those hardworking and loving moms out there, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day and hope you thoroughly enjoy your special day!
