Joe Alwyn is the Best Boyfriend (According to Taylor Swift Lyrics)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSC chapter.

Over the course of Taylor Swift’s long music career, she has often been criticized for the use of her private relationships for content for lyrics to her songs. It doesn’t seem particularly fair—I mean, plenty of songwriters use their romantic relationships, and who can blame them? All our lives (at least mine LOL) we’ve been taught to center love in our lives, as though without it, we wouldn’t be complete.

Maybe that’s why Taylor Swift’s music is so compelling, she shares her experiences about love in an easily accessible medium, in a beautiful way. Since Swift has practically documented her love life in music, we have seen the rise and fall of lovers in her life, from Joe Jonas to J*hn M*yer (we don’t say his name in this household). However, one boyfriend has managed to actually be a decent person and I’d just like to thank him. Joe Alwyn, Swift’s boyfriend of the last five years, seems to be the best boyfriend ever, at least, according to her music.

Here are my favorite Joe Alwyn shoutouts.

#7: peace – folklore

“All these people think love’s for show // but I’d die for you in secret.”

#6: Dancing With Our Hands Tied – reputation

“Could’ve spent forever with your hands in my pocket // a picture of your face in an invisible locket.”

#5: Dress – reputation

“And I woke up just in time. Now I wake up by your side.”

#4: Delicate – reputation

“My reputation’s never been worse // so you must like me for me.”

#3: invisible string – folklore

“One single thread of gold // tied me to you.”

#2: Call It What You Want – reputation

“I want to wear his initial on a chain ‘round my neck // chain ‘round my neck // not because he owns me // because he really knows me.”

#1: Daylight – lover

“I once believed love would be burning red // but it’s golden like daylight.”
