5 Podcasts that Itch My Brain Just Right

I have always been the kind of person who listens to the same 10 songs on repeat, and rarely are they songs that I found on my own. Listen, I’m awful at discovering music, and I was tired of pretending I enjoyed the hunt.

When I first saw the Podcast app on my phone, I treated it like every other app Steve Jobs decided I needed but would never actually use… you know like the stocks app. When I had binged every single video ever put out by my then-favorite YouTuber, Ingrid Nilsen, I took to her Podcast to get more of her content. Her show is now a thing of the past, and her career has made its way offline. I, however, became enthralled in the world of Podcasts.

I like to think I have pretty good taste, I don’t like shows where men talk at me, I like when the hosts laugh so hard they cry. I’ve got a good variety in my arsenal, and I thought I’d share just a few with you! Without further ado, and in absolutely no particular order, here are some of my favorite Podcasts at the moment:

Chatty Broads with Bekah and Jess

Chatty Broads, hosted by Jess Ambrose and season 22 contestant of the Bachelor Bekah Martinez, started as one of the many Bachelor-recap Podcasts that have inundated the market. Recently, they made the switch to stop recapping the show and stick to their other content, and I’m floored! They have a huge range of topics being covered: psychics, sex, celebrity encounters, motherhood, and so, so much more. These ladies have some of the most unfiltered, hysterical conversations, and I cannot get enough of it. Bonus: episodes are also recorded and posted to YouTube in case you’re a visual kinda girl!

My Favorite Murder

“MFM,” hosted by Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff, is easily one of the most popular Podcasts out there. You know the whole “girls are a little too obsessed with true crime” trope? Well, I’m guilty of it, and these two are 100% to blame. Every week, Georgia and Karen each tell the story of an awful event, usually a murder but sometimes survivor stories, catastrophes, and even the occasional haunting. Georgia’s natural wit and Karen’s successful background in comedy play off of each other perfectly, and I can always count on them to give me content that is interesting, tragic, informed, and hilarious all at the same time.

This is Actually Happening

Arguably the most disturbing of the Podcasts I love, hosted by Whit Missildine, can sometimes be pretty darn wholesome. Other times, I’ve even had to pause and revisit. This show brings in one or two new people every week to tell a story, from their own perspective, of a formative experience for them. This Podcast covers everything from alien abductions to messy divorces, the BDSM community to psychedelic medicine. While I love the show, I’d definitely encourage you to check the show notes for content and trigger warnings.

Against the Odds

Against the Odds, hosted by Mike Corey and Cassie De Pecol, is a story-driven Podcast that brings a new adventure every season. This Podcast is more adjacent to an audio-book, so if you’re into that, I’d def recommend. This show easily has the highest production value in this list, and it does each story justice. Stories covered so far have been the story of the Chilean mine collapse, the Uruguayan rugby team stranded in the Andes after a plane-crash, John McCain’s story of being a POW, and so much more.

And That’s Why We Drink

“And That’s Why We Drink,” hosted by Christine Schiefer and Em Schulz, is one of my recent favorites. With episodes that can reach as long as two and a half hours, these two are my road trip buddies. Each week, Christine shares a story of a murder, which are often times pretty gruesome. To aid that, Em follows up with a paranormal story, which can honestly be anything from poltergeists to cryptids. I personally am not a fan of the type of person who tries to explain away the paranormal (like come on just have fun with it), and these two will run with anything. My kind of people, for sure.
