Why You Should Keep a Journal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

When I was in first grade, I had a journal. I wrote about what I did everyday and turned it in to my teacher at the end of every week. Fast forward to my third year of college, I still do the same thing. I don’t know if it’s considered embarrassing but I have to admit that I do keep a journal. Call it what you will, but, I feel like keeping a journal is really fun and it’s a great way to have some alone time. It’s fun because you tailor it to what you like and however you want it. This is about you and everything going on in your life. I guess you can say it’s sort of like Snapchat, Instagram or even Facebook but in a different sense. Instead of short captions you can write as much as you would like whenever you feel like it and include as many pictures as you like. Doing things like keeping a journal is probably something “old-fashioned” but this is why you should keep it in your life.

  1. It’s interesting to see how you change as a person over time, you get to learn about yourself and actually see things that you would not normally see in your day to day life.
  2. It allows you to express all those feelings and emotions that you want to express without having to tell someone. I feel like it takes a lot of weight off my shoulders and helps me release stress.

  3. It gives you time to reflect on your thoughts.

  4. They are so fun to decorate if you’re into being creative and crafty.
  5. It lets your creative side out especially if you’re experimenting with different types of expression and writing. You never know what you’ll get out of it! Who knows? Maybe you’re an amazing writer and just haven’t found out yet!

  6. It creates memories! If you like to draw, then draw, if you like to write, then write, if you like to take pictures, put some pictures in there! It’s amazing to see what you experienced over the years.

  7. They can map out your whole life’s journeys and adventures.

  8. It gives you an excuse to get away from electronics for a moment.

  9. It’s always there even when your wifi or LTE data is down.

  10. It can actually help you stay organized and straighten out thoughts, tasks, and ideas.

Hopefully, these points have convinced you to consider keeping a journal. You never know where this will take you! With that said, happy journaling!
