Season Five of “The Crown” is being released on Netflix this week on Wednesday the 9th of November.

But what makes this season different from all the others is that it’s the first to be released in the wake of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

So here’s what you need to know about the upcoming season and why you need to watch it.

When is it set?

You’ll remember how the end of Season Four of “The Crown” (released in fall 2020) left us with the gruesome demise of Charles and Diana’s marriage. Played perfectly by Emma Corrin (Diana) and Josh O’Connor (Charles), the season centered around the arrangement, tribulations, and early failures of the infamous marriage.

This season keeps its focus on the early 1990’s. The spotlight of the new episodes shines on the inevitable divorce of Charles and Diana as well as the scandalous divorces of the Queen’s other children.

Prince William and Harry’s early lives are also documented alongside John Major and Tony Blair’s time as prime ministers.

Is it the same cast?

As was the case after the first two seasons, Season Five of “The Crown” features some fresh new faces. The role of Queen Elizabeth the Second will be taken over from Olivia Coleman by Imelda Stauton, with Jonathon Pryce playing Prince Phillip alongside her.

As for Charles and Diana, Dominic West has been cast as the older Prince Charles with Elizabeth Debicki as Diana. The new and more prevalent roles of the young princes have Senan West cast as Prince William and Will Powell as Prince Harry.

Does it feature Diana’s Panorama interview?

Totally. One of the most controversial interviews ever broadcast was Diana’s 1995 interview with Martin Bashir for the BBC. There was a formal investigation into the Panorama interview with Diana. Prince William publicly stated the “deceitful” way the explosive interview was obtained substantially influenced what Diana said.

His Royal Highness also said that the program “holds no legitimacy” and “should never be aired again.” The furious Prince claimed that it had established a “false narrative” that has been commercialized for over a quarter of a century.

Not only will it focus on the interview but the tragic death of the Princess will also be depicted in Season Six. With the series edging closer to the present day the effect of these reenactments is gaining more and more attention; as it is beginning to impact the lives of those who are depicted.

Will this Season Feature ‘The Revenge Dress’

The Revenge Dress is one of the most famous fashion moments in history. The same night in which Prince Charles revealed on national television that had been unfaithful to Princess Diana, she arrived at a charity event in ‘The Revenge Dress.’ This was the ultimate girl boss move.

The ensemble was a short-fitted, off-the-shoulder black dress with an asymmetrical hemline and a flowy chiffon trail. It is the most revealing outfit ever worn by a member of the royal family and is one of the style icon’s most famous looks. Elizabeth Debicki’s homage to this iconic moment will be a major moment in this season.

Is this the Final Season?

Not quite yet. Peter Morgan, the creator of the show, has stated that Season Six of “The Crown” will be the final season. It is rumored to cover the death of Princess Diana as well as the early stages of Prince William and Kate’s relationship.

The way in which the series will wrap up, however, is still left a mystery…
