The UCSB Parent Guide

There’s at least one weekend each quarter that my parents visit me during. While I absolutely love seeing them, it can be hard to find things to do with your parents once they’re actually here. Parent-friendly activities seem to be absent in Isla Vista. But not to worry, I’ve been through the trials of finding things to do with my parents here, and I’ve come out with some pretty good options. If your parents are visiting anytime soon, I have the solutions for you!

goleta

Don’t get the wrong idea from my introduction — my parents are actually a great time, and they probably wouldn’t mind going to a frat with me. But instead, I’ve taken them to some great spots where the drinks are strong and the music’s good. Recently, we tried a new restaurant at the Goleta pier called The Ellwood. When I tell you we loved everything that was put down on the table, I mean it. Not only is the food amazing (I recommend the Joel Robuchon Mashed Potatoes), but the view is also incredible.

This is a great place to sit back, relax, and enjoy a drink with your parents while catching up. We had a great time talking over a few of their spicy margaritas and actually stayed until closing time. As if this place couldn’t get any better, it’s only about a 5-minute drive away from campus, making it an easy spot if your parents aren’t as familiar with the Goleta and surrounding area. If you’re in the mood for a late-night dessert, take them down to Slodoco and call it a night!

Downtown Santa Barbara

Maybe your parents would rather be downtown, on the lively side of things. In that case, we love eating somewhere with a fun atmosphere and then going out afterwards. My parents and I normally hit Oku, Reunion Kitchen, Zaytoon, and Bluewater Grill. After enjoying a good meal and some drinks, we head to the bars. A few weekends ago, I took my parents to Biergarten and Dargan’s, and I was surprised at what a good time they had.

Going out with your parents is a great way to see your friends while also showing your parents what you may really be doing during your weekends. It’s a great way to bond with them and they’ll know what you’re talking about next time you debrief them over the phone. Sometimes all your parents may need is a good reminder of what it’s like to be 21 again.

montecito

I realize I’ve mentioned a lot about drinks and whatnot. But there’s nothing more refreshing than going the wholesome route. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, maybe it’s time to consider some brunch and beach plans. Personally, I love eating at the Jeannine’s Montecito location. I can never decide what to order because everything on the menu is tempting.

Treat your parents to a nice latte and some baked goods, and then head to the beach! Butterfly Beach is a short drive away, and you can walk and chat with your parents after a nice brunch. The best part about Montecito is all of the jewelry and flower spots you can hit. I can’t think of anything my mom loves more than a Montecito Mother’s Day, and I plan to take her there again this year.

My parents and I will definitely be at these places for Mother’s Day weekend, and I hope you get the chance to try them too! The parent-visit doesn’t have to be boring or awkward. Instead, it can be a way to really get to know them better and show them a glimpse of how you spend your time here as well. Take the opportunity to show your parents a great time, and they might just surprise you with how much fun you all have.

Brooke is a second year Economics major at UCSB who is also working on double majoring in Communication. In her free time, you can catch her spending a long day at the beach with friends, or binge watching Vogue Beauty videos (especially the Kendall Jenner ones). Although she is not used to writing for an audience, she is ecstatic to see where HerCampus takes her throughout her college career and beyond.
