Rising Risk for Women- The Consequences of Sunburns!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

When people think of summer, relaxing at the beach comes to mind.  In there at some point many be a sunburn or two, but it’s not a big deal right? Wrong. Recent research has shown that skin cancer is on the rise for young women but not for young men (Journal of Investigative Dermatology).  Women’s rate of melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer) is also going up in comparison to men’s.  The question is why?  The answer is that being brown and bronzed is in right now, and women are not taking the necessary precautions against cancer.  The tanning trend is a deadly one, and as summer approaches one must consider the question, is it worth the risk?

Prevention tips:
-Don’t Burn
-Avoid Tanning Beds
-Use Lots of Sunscreen!!!
-Stay in the Shade
– Use Self-Tanner-there are great ones out that you can buy in drug stores!
