Kiss Your Dry and Glowless Skin Goodbye!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

As the weather starts to get warmer and sunnier, we should also be changing our skin regimen to accommodate to how the weather is affecting our skin. Here are some tips for changing your skin regimen so you can have healthier and more moisturized skin!

Sunscreen!

Regardless of what season it is, you should always have sunscreen in your skin regimen because putting on sunscreen provides an extra layer of protection from the strong rays of the sun. Not putting on sunscreen can lead to sunspots and wrinkles and since you can’t just switch out your skin like you can switch jeans, you have to take care of your skin now! Putting on sunscreen is also a preventative measure from skin cancer so be careful and try to use it more often. If you’re lazy to put on so many products, there are many foundations and BB creams that have some SPF in it too so you can knock out two birds with one stone. Also if you’re like me and have visual veins on your face, the sunscreen can make it look less visible and obvious. Many dermatologists recommend that you use SPF 30 and up for more protection.

Lotion > Cream

The summer may be drying for our skin but it is not as drying as the winter. During the spring and summer, you want to switch from using heavy moisturizing creams to something a little lighter like a thinner lotion so you won’t burden your skin as much because summer just means humidity, summer sweats, and oil production! As if that isn’t already enough, using heavy creams can be too much and make you extra oily and can cause breakouts too. There are many craems and moisturizers out there so you can find the right one! I know a lot of people use Aveeno which I hear works quite well!

Toner

If you don’t already use toner in your skin routine, you definitely should pick one up! If you are someone with oily or acne-prone skin, using toner is helpful in the sense that it picks up impurities and leftover dirt and grime that you might not have gotten when you washed your face. It also helps shrink your pores! There are also toners that you can use to clean your skin when you do not feel like actually washing your face. Just put some toner on a cotton pad and wipe the dirt and impurities away! Depending on the toner you choose to try out, there are some that have humectants which can help you retain moisture in your skin as well! If you don’t want to purchase a toner, you can actually make your own using apple cider vinegar.

Consider doing a moisturizing face mask!

From time to time when I am procrastinating, I will make an excuse to do a face mask to put some moisture back in my skin. Depending on the cleansers and face products you use, sometimes you will find that your skin becomes extra dried out after it’s washed. A natural and very effective plant you can use is aloe vera, not only does it really moisturize your skin and calm down acne and blemishes, it feels super cooling when you put it on your face! Sometimes I put it on my face and let it sit for a bit and then I wash it off. It feels really good when you put it on and when you wash it off, it leaves your skin feeling refreshed and smooth.

Drink lots and lots of water!

This is not necessarily a skin regimen but it’s still extremely important regardless of what season it is. According to the United States Geological Survey, our bodies have about 60% of water, so when you don’t hydrate, our bodies prioritize where the water in our bodies go and sometimes, that means our faces get drier. I know I have this problem too because I get lazy to go fill up my water bottle So, remember to drink water to happy healthier glowing skin! It will also replenish the water that we sweat out walking around in the sun. Ideally you should drink ten to twelve cups of water a day and you should be able to see the results really soon!
