“How to Be Single” Review

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

If you are not enjoying being single you are not doing it right. At least that’s the motto in the movie How To Be Single.

We all have that one friend that just does not know how to be single — the serial monogamist, as I like to refer to it. In How to Be Single, the protagonist, Alice (portrayed by Dakota Johnson), is similar to such girls because she jumps from one boyfriend to the next unsure about what she truly wants. After deciding to take a ‘Ross-and-Rachel break’ from her current boyfriend, Alice is hurled into the singles’ world. A world that frankly can be the “best time of your life.”

The movie, similar to all films that get released on Valentines Day (He’s Just Not That Into You, Valentines Day) also focuses on different plot lines played by other famous actresses: Leslie Mann, Alison Brie, and Rebel Wilson. The storylines that follow them are of the cliché women you would see in a common dating pool; there is the one that’s a workaholic too busy to date anyone, the one that is just too good at being single—no man can lock her down, and finally there is the one that is so invested in looking for Mr. Right that she has it down to a science.

Unlike most romcoms this movie focuses on the many aspects that can lead one to happiness, whether it be true love, friendship, or even just finding yourself. The movie quite honestly pulls it off. In conclusion: although predictable, How To Be Single still guarantees a good laugh and a lot of fun. By the end of the movie all the single ladies will leave with a sense of empowerment, enough to get them shouting from the rooftops!
